Good day of hunting, almost a great day. 7/19/09

Hey folks, hope all is well. I walked a couple miles today with my nose towards the ground and came up with a few decent pieces. Found a double fluted paleo piece with an impact fracture. It sucks when your happy and sad at the same time doesn't it? Oh well it gives it some character right? On my way back as I reached down to pick up a water bottle I left I found the larger bifurcated, it made things better , but to tell the truth I'm still pretty upset about the broken Clovis. The tool is a pretty cool piece, and a nice piece of material. Thanks for looking , and have a good one.

Wow...great finds...and if I found a broken clovis and was able to ID it I'd do a happy jig all the way to next week.

Hey thirty7, Im kinda new to this hunting but, sofar i would gladly trade one of your bad days for one of my best. Those are some really neat pieces. When you said impact fracture do you mean in the knapping process or in the use of the point? Also is a double flute unusual for this point? Thanks for sharing your finds...Cool....

You are right thirty7 great hunt. For sure an impact fracture on that piece. Still a good find and hopefully there will be more for you there. Good finds.

Hey buckshot, thanks for the comments, most likely this fracture is from use, maybe they missed the target and the point hit a rock, or a hard surface that knapped off the tip? i wouldn't call double fluted points rare, I've seen many examples, but I dont have much paleo point experience. I'll post a pic of the other side, which shows the damage more clearly.

The break looks for all heck like a potlid to me, thirty7. The tip was too close to a fire.

yeah, I thought it kind of looked like a fire pop too, but I cant find any other evidence of fire damage on the point, discoloration, other similiar marks, etc, I figured it was some kind of unusual break caused from impact, mostly because of the clean linear breaks along the outside of the damaged area ?

The yellow area is a bit of cortex, not sure about the small red portion. I need to get a better look with a magnifying glass.

You cannot -- to my knowledge at least -- get that rough textured surface it shows by knapping.

great finds thirty7.that is a bumber about that paleo piece, but better than not finding it at all.that could be from fire damage.I have done some experiments with flint and fire and it is very interesting when you see what a fire can do to flint.what i have noticed is that the flint will sometimes just start to split and crack but these areas are usually smooth after you pull it out of the fire, unlike your paleo where it looks like it is kind of rough on the damaged area, now that could be due to the type of flint or the amount of heatyou should try it sometime the next time you have a campfire going.be careful you can catch some flint,i have seen some explode.
aint gonna find any heads sittin on the couch
