yesterday's finds
Hi all. Spent most of yesterday in a creek. Had a blast, lots of wildlife, no camera. Found mostly bones, but did find one point, I think a yarbrough, a nice little fossil, and I think this a bone tool. or maybe not a tool, but split open on purpose? I have found a few of bones with these straight smooth edges, can bones split like that naturally? Thanks for looking.

Nice point, I dont know much about the bone, it does look like it was split for some purpose. Creek looks like the ones around here, you from Missouri? Take care and good luck on your next hunt... JYD...

Re: yesterday's finds
is the end cut?
if it is it could be one of a few different tools
it looks cut because bone usually does not break that straight
can you post a picture of the end?

Re: yesterday's finds
Nice little point, Naturegirl!!
We went to the creek yesterday, too, and found pockets full of flint but no points. Wasn't the weather GREAT?! Sure doesn't feel like August in Oklahoma! Maybe we'll have an early Fall. Seems like this cooler weather makes the animals move around more--we saw lots of deer, quail and even some wild hogs.

Re: yesterday's finds
The weather feels like mid-Sept., I'll take it. Junkyard dog, I'm close, Im in NE okla. Made a quick afternoon trip to SW mo. recently, and found time to walk a nature trail along one of your creeks, there was nothing but chert! How do y'all find any points or flakes? The gravel bar you see in my pic is sandstone, the flint or anything else not sandstone shines. As do bones in the creek I'm learning.
Here is a pic of the end of the "tool" And I tried to get pictures of the "gnawing" I think I see on this thing. I know they are teeth marks. Here's my theory: It was split open for the marrow, it was cut from the rib-cage, blunt end, not jagged. And(the big one) it was gnawed on when the bone was soft and fresh, because the chewing altered the ridge on the side. The gnawing was done by flat teeth, like ours, because the marks are same, top and bottom. Think about how you pull meat off a rib. you slide your teeth together. That's what I think I see on this bone. Maybe not too recent because of the even patina. A rodent would have made more severe marks.
Or someone ate at Bad Brad's BBQ last year and tossed this into the creek, and it split naturally.
anyway, I found it a few feet from the point, and it was sure a lot of fun. The bones I found in the creek are a whole nother story.
