    Union Co IL Clovis

Nice point I picked up yesterday, was able to buy it from the finder who has had it for over 48 years. Made from Kaolin Flint

Used to be called a Ross County (Ohio) type. Now I'm not sure what it's official name is.

    Re: Union Co IL Clovis

I've seen several Kaolin Clovis from Southern Illinois. This is the best one that I have ever seen but know of several. I think I have a few more hidden around here. Sometime I'll take a picture of all of them together.

    Re: Union Co IL Clovis

Very interesting. Ross County fluted points are generally taken to have been made later in the Paleo era. How much later than (Early) Clovis nobody seems to know.

Check it out : both toes are burin flaked off. Burin flaking on point bases shows up in late paleo in general and continues into Early Archaic. Never seen that on a Ross before.

    Nice point !!!!!

    Beautiful Clovis!

I'm confused here. What would be the purpose of burin flaking the ears of a spearpoint? I thought burin flaking was to create a sharp chisel edge for engraving or carving bone or wood. Seems like 99% of the time it turns up on the edge of a blade, or working edge. Unless you count fractured base types like Decatur as burin flaked types.
