Re: just curious, how deep did they bury their dead???
Some Glacial Kame burials have been found at great depths.
The Arthur Zimmerman Kame which contained over 250 Late Archaic burials had several deep graves. One of the deepest on record was a single flexed burial at 22 feet. Several others were at 15 feet. All of these graves were dug by hand into natural sand and gravel knolls which were left by the last glacial advance. To dig a grave in sand and gravel at a depth of 22 feet is a deed not easily acomplished today, let alone 4,000-5,000 years ago.
BTW-The gorget in my icon is a Glacial Kame Knobbed Gorget.

Re: just curious, how deep did they bury their dead???
Chong,
was doing some research and reading histories
that were gathered from the first settlers in my
area. Small booklets that interview early folks.
In the house somewhere but for now they are
missing
This was in Illinois and around 1870's and they were
talking of an old Indian leader who was still in the
area. Did not move west with the main body of
Indians.
The old man died.
They remember that the few left from his tribe dug a
trench near a major creek and placed his canoe in the
trench. The body was placed in it and his rifle and
other special belongings. Everythig was buried.
The creek was made into a major canal here in Illinois
and the location was surely destroyed.
Just one way it was done here in Illinois.
have a good un...........
In the academies many books, at the circus many sacks of peanuts, at the club rooms many cigar butts.

I wouldn't worry too much.
I don't think you'll Accidently Dig one while detecting.
(I figure that's why your curious.)
the only way I imagine they would be exposed is If
they buried in a flood area, and I don't think indians
would have made that mistake.
at least from what I heard of the Indians habits around here,
they were very enviromentally concious, and even buried their garbage.
So it stands to reason they knew How to bury their dead and keep them Buried.
I know some around here are under large Boulders also.
discriminate out Spike TV and American Diggers !

Re: just curious, how deep did they bury their dead???
I grew up in Ohio where there wer alot of mounds. I heard stories from the old farmers who said some of the bones were huge. They had heard this from old timers themselves who owned farms or worked on them. I found this site a year or so ago and it was really interesting.
