10-27-2010 Hunt - I Did Pretty Well
I started out at the crack of dawn this morning and was at my first spot just as it got light enough to see. We had a great amount of rain on Tuesday so I figured the site would be washed down really good and it was, but I didn't do as well as I'd hoped. I spent 3 1/2 hours on the first site and found one nice Triangle Point, a nice Shell Disc Bead, a bunch of Pottery Shards, and a few broken pieces. I had hoped for more, but it's still better than nothing.
After leaving there I decided to drive north to see if I could find a field to hunt and after going about 30 miles and seeing nothing I decided to turn around and head back south. I crossed over into Ky and checked a few spots and the crops were out everywhere but nothing was turned. I crossed back into Ohio and figured I would check one more area and as drove through it was the same thing, all the crops were out but nothing was turned. I got the end of the road to check one last spot and then I was heading home and lo and behold one of my favorite spots to hunt had been chisel plowed on one side and planted in winter wheat on the other. I was one happy camper.
I walked in as fast as I could and as soon as I hit the field I made my first find. A really nice Celt. I almost missed it as I walked right by it, but something caught my eye to the left and when I stopped to look at that I saw the blade edge sticking out. I got down on my hands and knees to get a closer look and saw it was definitely a blade so I snapped a picture and then flipped it out. It's got just a small part of the poll damaged, but other than that it's really nice. I'm fairly certain it's a Hopewell Celt since it's got squared off sides and is a common type for the site. I also found another nice Triangle Point, a Buckcreek, a couple of broken Discoidals, some broken points, some Scrapers, and a very nice Uniface Side Scraper or Blade. All in all a very productive day.
The first picture is the days finds and the rest are the only good in situs I got.

Here's some cleaned up pictures of the days finds.
Also a picture of the Uniface Tool right after I picked it up which shows the flaking a little better and a Flint Hammerstone I found.

Wow,
Nice finds. Thanks for sharing them. I really like the celt; although it might have been mounted as an "Ades" since the bit is off center. (Hafted to the top of a handle, perpendicular to the handle)
Really nice either way. (Ades, were especially usefull for chopping out the inside of a dugout)

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the comments. If my legs and knees didn't hurt so badly from walking for such a long time and distance yesterday I would go up and hit it again. lol
Triplecreek, It probably is a Adz and not actually a Celt because of the angle of the blade edge.

SRV - that's one hell of an Adze. I love the in-situ. Love finding them just peaking out like that. You can tell the instant you touch it whether there's a lot more in the ground or not.

Thanks Twitch.
That's exactly what happened on this Adz. Before I flipped it out or even took the picture I tried to see if it would move and I could tell there was a lot more there than what was showing. I was pleasantly surprised when I flipped it out and saw it was pretty much whole. It just has that flea bite of damage on the poll end.
