    Another Very Successful Hunt

When I was leaving the spot I hunted on the Ohio River yesterday I noticed a spot where they had bush hogged a field and there were a lot of bare spots showing. I kind of walked through quick yesterday just to what it looked like and saw a few pieces of flint so I decided to go back this morning and check it out and man am I glad I did. There were quite a few bare spots exposed throughout the field and this spot used to be really good when they plowed it years ago so I was hoping I'd get lucky.

I only found two good pieces and a bunch of flint, but one of them is a killer Archaic Knife made of some very nice black Zaleski flint. The Knife was almost completely exposed and was laying right in the middle of a bare spot. I saw it from about 15 feet away. The small Side Notch was about 30 feet from the Knife and laying amongst the weeds. Not bad for a little over an hour hunt. I wish they would plow this spot again.

You took the road less traveled. And found this knife. It comes from your experieince in this geo area, and a sharp eye. Very nice Archaic artifact!!!!!!!

    Re: Another Very Successful Hunt

Thanks guys and gals. The field I found this in has produced some very fine pieces over the years, but unfortunately they haven't plowed it in probably close to 10 years. There are apartments on one end of it now and I figured it wouldn't hurt to look around after they knocked all the high weeds down and it paid off. The end where the apartments are was always the best and produced some very fine Archaic serrated types, a few Thebes, at least one Lost Lake that I know of, and plenty of other Archaic types. Sadly it is lost forver now, or at least for my lifetime anyway.

Treefrog, that material is called Zaleski Flint and it's a very high grade of black flint that comes from a deposit near the town of Zaleski in Vinton county, Ohio. Since that is only about 50 miles from where I live and hunt we find quite a few pieces made from it. I have seen everything from Clovis to Ft Ancient Triangles made from it so it was popular throughout all the cultures.

Brandywine, that is actually a piece of red foam that is used in frames and those pictures are taken at home after I cleaned up the finds.

I love that knife. Great color (we don't get that much of darker flint around here) and super flaking. I've been jonesing bad for a good hunt--it's been about two months since I got out! Thanks for sharing!
