"THE PREDATOR" : early archaic eye-candy..(UPDATE!!......another photo
Hey folks, just wanted to share this beauty with you all. I found this outstanding artifact on April 23, 2010 in Goat Creek, which is located in extreme Northeast Mississippi. I believe it to be a Hardaway/Pinetree variant. It has characteristics of both types. Most definitely early archaic (7000-8000 b.p.) It measures 3" long x 1 5/8" wide at the tangs. What can I say? This is a true "killer" all day. It is extremely thin and symmetrical, with both faces exhibiting outstanding flaking. The base is heavily ground and the edges are serrated. I'm not sure what the official name of the lithic material is, but it is super colorful and glassy. High-grade stuff. Everything is perfect on this point! It is so rare to find one that has no damage whatsoever and is in G10 condition. I will be posting my recent creek finds soon, so stay tuned! Thanks, enjoy and HH!

Wow Creekwalker! That is a beauty!!!Awesome find man, I ccan see why the trouble of typing it. I have never seen a split tailed pinetree before. The main body sure looks like a pinetree form but that base hmmm.......That has me puzzled. The material looks like heat treated Jasper......imo..........Again Awesome find man!!!...........................GTP(Chris)

Beautiful piece. I think i saw it in "Todays Finds'' section. Did you have a good looking horse creek one as well? You need to show that one to. Very cool.

Nice bifurcated Kirk, appears to be heat treated Tishimingo chert. I love those North Mississippi creek finds. I am not far from you, I walk creeks in Hardeman co. TN and surrounding areas.

Stupendous piece !
IMHO, Early Archaic point types are not as rigidly distinct as people would image from reading typology books : it's not that unusual find one clearly recognisable type with the shape, flaking, basal treatment or notching of another type. You could call them hybrids, maybe.
Early Archaic Points and Knives by Robert Edler is well worth getting or borrowing via inter-library loan to read if these are of interest.
