2_20_2011 new dig finds!!
spent a few hours in the dirt today. did better than the last few trips.
found a 5th pestle today but no pics of it, gave it to 2 9-10 yr old guests (from Texas)that and 1 nice point for them too.
the pestle was in pretty good condition but the beating end had several big chunks missing. still was fun to see it and watch the face of 4 other people watch it get pulled out by the oldest kid.
had a blast and a really nice day. even had my shirt off for a bit digging...

Is that moss on them or just dirt.

Re: 2_20_2011 new dig finds!!
thx for the comments all..
no that is mineral deposits like calcium etc from sitting under the ground for so long.
all of these were under about 3.5- 4 feet of dirt ..
that last point is also the 2nd pic before cleaning it. it came out beautiful with an orange bullseye on one side of it.
I take the pics before then after cleaning them all up for display...

Nice Tree. I bet those kids were fired up digging arrowheads. Those are going to clean up nice. The 7th pic down looks like a ledbetter. Are you still digging out in front of the shelters? Looks good.

What a nice collection you have from that site! I have trouble keeping up with the pieces/artifacts from the dig. All I know is you keep the shovel in the dirt!!And the pics keep on coming.

Re: 2_20_2011 new dig finds!!
Tn Mtns, yes Im still out front of the shelter, I moved to the other sideer area where there is a 4-5 ft wall and Im digging about 4-4.5 ft down near the bottom of it.
tea Ive been pondering on what it is, not sure was looking at Smithsonia? Buck Creek? Ill have to read a little about the Ledbetter. Im thinking that I have 4-6 Buck Creeks already from this site., but not for sure they are.
what would u call em?

Re: 2_20_2011 new dig finds!!
I think you are safe in saying buck creek on those. I was saying ledbetter on that one cause the way the blade was curved. It would put it in the same time frame as buck creek. I have some curved ledbetters if you want to compare.
Boy I found a cave/shelter the other day on the river. It was dug maybe 30 years ago by the looks of it. They did not dig the front or edges and it is deep in shell.
I am trying to get permission for this summer. It is full of coyotes right now.
Thanks for sharing always enjoy your finds.

Re: 2_20_2011 new dig finds!!
ya it has a sharp needle tip, I was thinking a buck creek that had been heavily resharpened, but Ill have to study the ledbetter. Man Im beginning to think that the front yard of shelters are the place to dig. I'd say they spent more time there working with tools like these than they spent inside the shelter itself.
thx for your thoughts Tn_mtns
