Thanks Y'all. I think the bowl thing was made naturally it was the stone that encased a flint nodule, that left the bowl shape. The natives either broke it open or found it broke open and formed it, the back is also concave. I think they used it to mix or grind in (tattoo ink, dart poison, war paint ) you name it. Little rock bowls that are complete are pretty scarce around here. Most are broken. It is the second whole one I've seen come out of this area. A lot of tools at this site. Someone has done a pretty good job at collecting up the points and even broke points are hard to find in this area. I'll just have to look harder.

Kris, I like the bowl, even if all you find are tools they are really just as important as points, actually more so...it gives us a more complete understanding of how they lived...I have found fossilized shells that had a paint or dye mixed in them...goat

    Kris,
Are you digging or just on the surface? Could you post any pics of the spring just so I have an idea of what to look for in my area? Thank you!

Re: 3-9-11 Surface finds from around a spring

Thanks again for kind words. Prim 1, I surface and dig. These were all surface with the exception of the point base. It was just under the first layer of cracked mud. I could see flint between the puzzle pieces of cracked clay. I moved a few out of the way and there it was. I don't have any photos of the spring, I don't take this camera to where I hunt. I can tell you that where water comes to the surface in our area there is lime all over. I have seen springs where water came out of a hole in the ground, They call them artisan wells, the spring these came from is a sheet of exposed rock the water flows from underneath and has for millennium. I think places where water poured from the ground were considered sacred and still are. I do enjoy finding cool tools but points and knives... they are what I like finding the most. happy hunting !
