My brother and I found this extremely nice artifact yesterday afternoon in a rock shelter. It was at a depth of a little over three feet, one of our deepest finds to date. We noticed the outer core of the flint is still attached at the base, is this common?
Do you think this piece is finished as a lancelot type or perhaps a blade that didn't receive it's base and/or notches? Is it possible to "type" this one? Either way, it's one nice piece! I'm not sure if the photos will show just how beautiful it is. Any and all opinions are greatly appreciated.
As a side note, these two artifacts were recovered earlier in the week, in the same shelter, but not as deep. The crust bug has bitten us again! Whatever it is that's sticking to this flint is nearly impossible to remove! Not complaining though, we still like them!
1320! i would say that it is a hand knife, look at the sides looks to like percussion flaking 1/3 of the way from the rind and resharpend by preasure klaking rest of way to point.. knife something a little like a kerrville knife only a little different shape....
Very nice looking Blade and I'd say it is definitely a finished piece. There is too fine of flaking along the Blade edge for it to be a preform. Leaving the outer core on a piece isn't all that uncommon.
"Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends."
Many thanks for offering the sound replies. It's really helpful to have the piece in hand while reading these responses, it's a tremendous help. For what it's worth, I so wanted this piece to be a knife!
I think its a knife...tmodel said like a kerrville knife....I agree, have seen and held a few kerrvilles and on all of them they left the rind....differant place, differant flaking ....goat
