    what is it?

A friend that got me permission to hunt a new field the other day showed this to me. he said he found 2 of em when he was young (50+ yrs ago) on his Dads farm while a road crew was cutting a road in front of their house.
He now only has 1 of them and I was not sure what it may be. grinding mortar maybe? old new? I have never saw anything like it. 1st thing I thought when I saw it was it would make a good ashtray.
any comments are welcome even if you think it is new made. It may be, we have no idea what it is though.
both side are pretty much the same way with a small dimple in the center.

It's a really nice cupped discoidal if it's good. Material looks like polished quartz. Jmo

    Re: what is it?

That is a Cahokia style Discoidal or Chunkey Stone as some people refer to them. Those are very highly prized artifacts and can be worth a small fortune. I saw one at a show in Ripley years ago that was huge and looked like a cereal bowl and the guy had paid $30,000 for it. I heard later he had sold it for $40,000+.

Check out page two at this link and you can see a Cache of them that were found at the Cahokia Mounds site.

That is a beautiful dimpled discoidal. Material is quartz...... That is a fine piece if it is authentic. I've seen them go for several thousand. That 40k is insane... I do know collectors pay serious money when they want something in their collection........... I guess if ya got it .....ya got it......lol...............GTP

    Re: what is it?

thx for all of the replies and info. I will be talking to the owner and see if he wants to keep it or get rid of it. it has been laying around on a tabletop for years. I told him yesterday he had better put it into a safer place where it won't be broken knocked around.

    thx,
