My only place to hunt has produced some points (and flake debitage) and few tools. I found another spot about 1/2 mile away that has produced some tools (and debitage), but no points...
I found a couple of tools yesterday and a couple more today. These are todays, and I'll also post yesterdays mysteries. I'm thinking the second one is a maul or hammer(?) and the other I don't have an idea (?)
Photo's 1-4 are the tools found the day before. This is a saltwater tidal area, and today's search was up higher next to the bank in smaller gravel, producing smaller artifacts/points below.
Yep, water worn for sure. The basalt is a lot softer than the agate and petrified wood points. No fields to search around here, but on the beach, you don't have to worry about plow breaks !!!
Yup,thats for sure, this is my first year of field hunting(surface hunting) as ive always dug and sifted local rockshelters ,and some of the plow damaged points im finding are really breaking my heart, but hey ive found a few completes in the field ,so I will keep at it,along with digging, sure wish there was an area like yours around here.I always love new places/method's of finding points..happy hunting 'mate.
Yes that mystery stone in the first photos could have been brought down from British Columbia - there were trading and war parties between these tribes. It's a straight shot with protected waters - probably a week or two trip via canoe.
The other one you mentioned was made from petrified wood, or in this case, the petrified wood is agate. The petrified (agatized) wood here has a cream-to-tan outer area, and black interior.
This is a photo shows both the tool, and a piece of petrified (agatized) wood from the same spot that I put in the rock tumbler and polished:
