slate maybe not tool but something man made?

flint_seeker was hoping to find his first his first banded slate peice today, so i took him to some phenominal fields just loaded with flint (just ask him), and he came across this (hard to tell ) but banded slate peice he was ready to sling back. as he handed it over to me i noticed tons of man made scratches all over it and not a peice jagged on the edge, very smooth around the whole thing, no hole attempts and very very thin. dont know what it is but has manufacturing marks everywhere, so he thinks im crazy now, lol. what is it

It look's like it could be something but I couldn't tell you what for sure, those scratches sure look man made. Maybe someone with a more expert eye can tell what it might be. It is interesting.

Hay Trevmma , I think you may have a piece of catlinite / Minnesota Pipestone there .
I've found many pieces of it ,. in N.W. Iowa and most [90% ?] of the odd bits are "worked" in a similar manner . Might represent a much favered camp fire past time ,.. much like whittle'n ..??
Catlinite has been traded far and wide from the pits of Pipestone Minnesota . Could you tell us [Me,.. ..please] how far,.. or where this piece was found from S.W. Minn.

    Thanks ,...Blindpig

    Trev,

Yes, a piece of a slate artifact. Being flat, I would guess gorget or pendant. Very possible that one was broken off a complete piece, and then salvaged on the edges. The lines are classic engraving, and that is a keeper for sure. If I had it my hand, I might be able to take a guess at the type.
