Re: Historic or Modern????
Hard to tell from the picture but I thought the wrapping looks like friction tape.

Re: Historic or Modern????
Frank, I beleive you may have a mid 1850's -1870's trade type knife. The blade look's sort of cheaply made not a real high quality type blade, like say a modern made blade would be. By modern I am talking about after 1900. It is a interesting item for sure. I wonder if if it would be possiable if you could play jigsaw puzzle and get those bits and pieces of the handle fitted back together. It is interesting.

Re: Historic or Modern????
Most def. a histiric era trade piece ,looks mid 1800's ,looks like they wrapped it with some type of "white man cloth" and added some sort of homemade glue ,pine sap, asphaltium, etc. Thats the reason why it still has some cloth on it,you can tell the blade has been hammered and shaped from its form and shape. As for the incisions dont know what to tell ya there, likely indian marks of some sort.Real good condition for its age,the handle is basicly "firewood",as it is beyond restoration(i would keep it though)real nice find if ya ask me!
