Recent Find (Type?)
I found this point recently and I'm having a difficult time trying to identify it. Maybe it's a type that doesn't fall into a recognized category? It's really thin, has some light basal grinding, wide shoulders, and is fluted / thinned with multiple strikes. Any ideas or suggestions on type would be appreciated.

Re: Recent Find (Type?)
Hi Th3rty7,
While most triangles in the Mid-Atlantic area are Late Woodland - Historic, triangles are known from the Archaic and even Late Paleo. I believe some triangles were recovered from the Late Paleo Plenge site in New Jersey. The flaking does not strike me as particularly Late Woodland in appearance, and the basal grinding suggests an earlier time period as well.

Re: Recent Find (Type?)
The style is similar to Jeff points from KY/TN but it's obviously out of region for that.

Re: Recent Find (Type?)
Nice looking point! Maybe a resharpened Redstone? A rare type found in our area, sometimes described as a fluted triangular point. Whatever it is it's a nice find. Thanks for the view.

Re: Recent Find (Type?)
I have one that looks really close to that. Found in Tn. Someone told me it was a Levanna. How true that is I dont know. I`m just starting this new addiction, but thought I`d throw my 2 cents in.

Re: Recent Find (Type?)
Thanks for weighing in fellows, your opinions are appreciated. I think this is an early point because of the style of flaking, basal grinding, form, and where it was found. This particular spot has produced some fluted types as well as Dalton variants. I found a percussion flaked preform in close proximity. Last year I found a fluted point and some early uniface tools in the area. Problem is there are archaic through mississippian components as well so it makes id'ing pretty tough. I did some research on the Jeff type and you'r right twitch I'm east of their distribution but I read many have been found in the Cinch river valley of eastern Tn. That's only a couple valleys away from me really. It's possible the culture was here. I agree the shape and size is similar.
My first thought was Alamance, a late paleo type that is similar to Hardaway Daltons with ground shoulders and thinned bases...often fluted. I have to admit Redstone crossed my mind because of the shape and multiple flutings, hope so, If there was one point to find on my bucket list it would be a Redstone. This point is right at 2" long and 1 3/8" wide. Thanks again for the suggestions and opinions.

Hey Terry, appreciate your help. I have seen some really small paleo points and found a few myself. I think alot of people think they are generally large points but I've seen plenty of Clovis, Cumberland, Beaver Lakes, etc. well under an inch in length. I hope you're right, thanks.
