    Weekend Dig Find/Pestle/Hammerstone?

Found this rock unit over the weekend at my farm dig. Four and a half inches long. A little under 2 inches in diameter. The red color on it seems to be on the surface. I think it is a tool of some kind. The one end is flat with a lot of line marks on it? Thanks for the help!!

is the material greasy feeling? It almost looks like soapstone and could be a pipe preform

I'd recognize that material anywhere. It's a piece of Ohio Pipestone, and like jpitt said, it is more than likely a Tube Pipe preform.

    Great find Keith!!

    Re: Weekend Dig Find/Pestle/Hammerstone?

I went to the Southern Ohio Museum in Portsmouth, Ohio today. Steve posted some pics from the museum a while back. The artifacts were great! They had a rock identical to this piece on display!! Not to say this is a museum piece as they had a lot of other typical artifacts also. They also had a discoidal similar to the one I found a couple weeks ago. What a learning experience between this forum and the museum.
