    Natural or Man-Made?

I found this many years ago in dredge material that was full of fossilized bones and sharks teeth. It looks and feels like fossilized bone and it's very smooth. There were kitchen middens in the area also. Just looks too perfect a hole to be natural. Just wonder what you Native American Indian experts think this might be and used for.

    Thanks for any info.

    Re: Natural or Man-Made?

Jonnie, it is most likely a gorget, usually made from shell, bone or stone, but usually shell. This area they used large whelk shells and took a part near the opening and made a large disc, and they either had 1 hole in the center, or 2 holes inline each off center. Those 2 holers were normally more rectangular, and not common around here. Sometimes they have 3 holes, and are larger than that one, but again, those arent common around here. There was a 3 hole large one found last year off Jupiter Inlet. State took it.
