    Odd shaped spearhead

Hi everyone. I found this spearhead Monday while diving an old riverbank. I usually find at least one every time I dive this spot, but this one seems a little different. On one side it is straight with an acute angle barb (what I'm used to). But the other edge seems more bulbous with a rounded barb angle that is finely finished to a very nice meticulous edge. It appears to be made this way intentionally. It's about 3.5" long. Anyone ever seen one like this? I'm thinking it may have been a fish spear based on where I found it. Also it appears to have been possibly burned. Thanks everyone , enjoy all your posts. Heres some pics.

    Re: Odd shaped spearhead

    Greetings,

Thats a nice point. Good size too...as for being a fish spear..not too sure about that. The shape seems to be two-fold possibility...one....the ear was damaged and re-worked giving it the out-of-kilter appearance...two...the stone used was a little hard to chip on that side...it appears from the photo to be thicker on one half than the other....also seem to perhaps be made from petrified wood...some points I have from petrified wood look like that at any rate.

FYI the black on the point rather than being burned is water patination. The discoloration is formed from minerals in the water settling on the stone. It is found quite often in rivers and lakes....it will settle on most anything. Normally I don't clean this off as it adds to the character of the point.

Looks like you have a great site. What is the largest point you have found there??

    Happy Hunting,

Hey, thanks for the info! I found a beautiful red knife blade about 6 inches long and a very cool looking native american pipe at this same spot. There is LOTS of native american pottery sherds at this site as well. If you'd like to see the blade and the pipe I'll post. Thanks again!

Lot of people think that river patina is ugly- and in some extreme cases it can be, but for the most part I actually like it. Nice point- would like to see some of the pottery shards to!
