    Dry Creek Find

I found this item in a dry creek today. It fits well in the hand in several positions. It seems to have ding marks on both ends and one side, like it was used for pounding. It looks to be an old piece, and looks worked. I am a newbie and would like to know if this is a tool, and what it could be used for. It is only 3 inches long and 1 1/4 inches wide. Also is this petrified wood, opalized wood, or some other rock material?
