Finally Got My First Good Find Of 2012
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We finally got a couple of my good spots plowed here just recently since the weather has been in the 60's and even the 70's for the past couple of weeks. Add in some nice thunderstorms that have rolled through and dumped some heavy rain and I finally got a chance to hunt a few times. The first 2 hunts didn't produce much other than a few decent Scrapers and some broken Points. Then on Monday, the 23rd, I decided to hit a favorite spot of mine before work since we had two lines of thunderstorms pass by in the overnight hours.
I had about 2 hours to hunt and had been there around and hour and was finding all kinds of flint, but no artifacts yet when I spotted a black tip protruding from the ground. I got down on my knees and gave it a little wiggle and it didn't move very easy so I figured I might get lucky. I got the in situ, said a little prayer under my breath, and pulled this black beauty from the ground.
When I first pulled it out my first though was a really nice Hopewell Point, and since this field produces a lot of Woodland pieces I figured I was correct. But after getting it home and cleaning it a saw that the base has some nice grinding on both sides and the end, so unless I missed the memo where the Hopewell started grinding their Points, I have to believe it's an older type but just what I'm not sure. I kind of thought maybe a Hardin, but they just aren't found in my area very often so if it is it's a rare find. I also thought maybe a Table Rock and that is a good possibility. Anyone have any ideas I am open to hearing them. By the way, this is made from some very nice Zaleski Flint and has a small inclusion on one side that may be a Crinoid Fossil.
Here are some pictures of the Point and also a small Triangle from the same site that I didn't get an in situ of since I didn't realize it was a Point until I picked it up.

Is the base kinda large compared to the point part? Is this something old, re-sharpened alot? OK that's my thoughtful reply, otherwise, NICE! it's pretty!.. like the frog too!

Looks like you had a successful hunt with all the pieces you found. The Zaleski piece is a really nice piece being symmetrical and having a nice shape to it. I also think that it might be a Hopewell point but I'm not very good at identifying point types and am probably wrong. The base does look long but the point was probably much longer before the resharpenings.

Steve - Nice point. In the ground when it's still dirty it really looked like Coshocton. Zaleski is nice material. It definately looks like a Woodland point. I wonder if it may be Adena related? From southern Ohio I've seen a couple of similar points typed as Adena but really don't know. As usual your best bet is probably to send me the point and let me examine it for a couple of decades at which time I'll then claim to have lost it and be unable to return it.

Nice finds Steve. I'm not much help on point I.D. from your neck of the woods but It's put together right and made from quality material. I'd put it in a frame. It's a beauty !
