    Indian Hatchet/club??

This was found by a friend of mine over 50 years ago along the shore in Maine, on a bank where there was clam shell mounds and supposedly was an old Indian camping area. When he found it there was a wooden handle as big as around as a half dollar and about two feet long, this handle had a crotch in it that this piece fit into and was cinched to it with reeded grass, unfortunately when he picked it up the handle and cinching disintergrated and all he was left with was the hatchet(?) head. Any ideas on exactly what this is and the approx. age?
the overall dimensions are it is about 5 inches long by 3 1/2 inches high and 2 inches thick, it is made of stone (what kind I don;t know).

I would love to see the remains of the handle and reeds, as usually that material doesnt stand up to mother nature unless it is a cave item. With those grooves it was definitly mounted to something and my guess it could have been either or both.

Wicked ax head MD! Here in Iowa we would call that a 3/4 grooved round polled ax with groove ridges from
the middle archaic, around 5 to 7 thousand years ago. Cool find!
