Here are some hammerstones that I picked up last year.

I may just post them. They look exactly like yours. I've also found circular hematite "Balls" as well. I'll have to post em!.. Nice finds!!!!

Thanks for the posts! This field I've got seems to be a quarry or camp site. There are pieces of flint everywhere. This is a field that I would not walk barefoot! You have to walk it pretty slow because of all the flint. I'm always afraid that I will miss something. I have also found a few of the quarry stones. They are made of Boyle Chert or Ft. Payne and are usually about the size of a football. I usually find a lot of preforms here also.

You would know better then I, but it kind of sounds like a work station with all the flint and beat up hammerstones.

I think you are right on it Bean Man. That was what I was saying in the earlier post. It does seem to be a quarry or camp site. From all the evidence I've seen, they made massive amounts of points and tools over the many centuries that they inhabited this area. There are a lot of pieces of flint lying around that were worked. I guess they did not like the way it was going and tossed each piece aside. I was telling the owner one day that it looked like they had an assembly line set up.

i will pick one up a get a pic. how do you tell they are hammerstones when you see them

They will often be about the size of a baseball or tennis ball, sometimes a little smaller. They are usually a little roughed up from usage. Over time, the constant pounding puts scuffed marks (for lack of a better term) on them. I've seen some that are a little flat on the sides and round in the middle. I guess it made them easier to hold when they were a little flat on the sides.

I found this with the strange rocks last year. I'm not sure. It's pretty big, about the size of a softball and made out of granite. What do think? Thanks!

Hey Bean Man! From what I can tell from the pic, it does resemble a hammerstone. Were there any flint flakes or tools found nearby?

Yes, I believe so, and a bunch of strange rocks I'm currently calling, guarry byproducts.
