Algerian Sahara Pottery...

This is a few pieces I found around some old abanded wind washed and sand buried ruins deep in the Sahara dessert Algeria..The place was a old lay over station where people could get water and trade wears according to the local people at that time and the sand had all but reclaimed.. I had to use a small dozer to move alot of sand to get down to the floor of this site but it was all worth it in the end.. these 2 pieces were legally obtained and cleared through customs in all ports of exit and reentry.. I do not know how old they are considering that travel path through there has not been used for many many years they are thought to be either from the early Moors or Berber tribes.. Thanks Mike

That is too cool. There has to be a way to date it. I would imagine its older than you might think. Nice find.

Very kewl pieces and I appreciate you showing them. I have some pottery that isn't indigenous to our continent, it's always interesting to study and compare.

Thanks all.. I have a couple of other pieces that I have never taken pics of, I will try to do that.. I have a piece that I found over there along with this pottery that I have wondered what it is? I have come to the conclusion that it might be a type of ceramic spoon? I found one similar looking to this one here on the coast I will post aswell... any thoughts on them is appreciated.. If pottery at all, it looks more like white man Crockery than from any native cultures. I see no tempering at all, or evidence of any additives.

MattR,This is the other pieces I brought back from the Sahara Dessert, I dont know if it is as old as the first ones, but it was with them in the same ruins... The smaller vase was got in Algiers Algeria the capital, before it got to risky & dangerous for Americans or any ex-pats to travel there... Thanks... Mike

Thanks..... I have a few other pieces there that I will try to bring home next pass,They are fragile and with the air travel out of there they would get broke if I tried to put them in a belly bag.. So I only hand carry one at a time and I dont get hassled by customs that way either, I am really intrested in the small ancient Tea cups they use.. I have found several out in the sand but they have all been busted..Some of them must have hundreds of years worth of stain in them, the old free hand painting is real nice.. And if my unit is where it is suppose to be I will explore Libya..... Thanks again... Mike
