    what is this?

    my brother found this in 1996 along the huron river in erie county,ohio! may be an abrader or a sharpening stone of some kind!

    It's definitely the right size for a hand tool. sorry I don't know what. My friend is an avid Indian artifact collector. I'll show him your post.

    Could also be what some call a "sinew stone". I believe a sinew stone is used to clean sinew strands for tools. But maybe not?

    whatever it is..the grooves are man made..always interested in the mystery stuff!

    Here is a photo from a book with a similar style stone. I am still looking for the book that has a similar stone but actually called a sinew stone. Book reference is on the photo.

    Stones like that were also called abraders.....in flint knapping you have to dull the edge of the piece your are working to create "platforms" from which to work flakes. The abrading stone was actually created by "sawing" the edge of the arrowhead or knife across it dulling the edge to make knapping easier, thus forming grooves in the softer stone....most here are made of some type of coarse stone...many times sand stone.
