    Am I Jinxed?

    Hey guys and gals...
I was out today in my best field. As seems the usual, I didn't find any points. What is strange is I am finding more "odd" stuff...LOL
Below is two photos of today's finds. I still wish I could find some points! Maybe I am jinxing myself by bringing my camera. What do you all think. The top photo is a cobalt blue bead. It has incised lines running from hole to hole. The area around the holes is pitted slightly as if it were on a strand and the ends kept tapping together. The bottom photo is a lead bullet. I guess it is about .30 cal. I would love to believe it is an Indian drop, but more likely it is a drop from a hunter. This is the same field I believe to be a hunting camp or a temporary home sight for what ever Indians lived here. (But then this is in a flood zone.) I doubt the bullet is from a Civil War skirmish as nothing notable happened south of my town...only in and north, east and west of it.

I scaled your lead roundball at about .528 inches which would be about right for a 30 gauge Indian trade musket.

I have a similar lead ball found in a field where hundreds of points have been found over the past 50 years,it has been fired but is about the same diameter as yours. The field mine was found in was known to ge an Indian campground.

If you could take photo of the field showing the risies and low spots that would help me point you where to go and look. Nice looking bead though!

    Re: Am I Jinxed?

After thinking about the Civil War movements of troops here The lead ball could be a CW drop. BUT...I don't think CW soldiers used .30cal. I may be wrong though. Troops on both sides may have marched near this site between Moorefield south to Petersburg Gap and into Petersburg WV proper.

BUT .30 cal Does anyone know if CW soldiers used this small size?

    Re: Am I Jinxed?

That musket ball scales too big to be a .30 caliber ball .A 30 gauge ball is just a few thousands smaller than a .54 caliber ball .30 gauge, possibly an Indian trade musket,.54 caliber maybe Civil War ,as a lot of .54 calibers were used in that war.

Don't confuse guage with caliber ,they are horses of a different color.
