Decided to take a walk on the river bank after work. The flood of 2006 did a number on the river banks of the schuylkill. Anyway was walking for a bit with my metal detector and this thing popped out at me, I have no clue what it is, but it seems to be white or yellow clay it has a X or a plus sign carved in the top and underneath there is some sort of impression. I was thinking it looks like one of those erb smashers or something like that. My friend says maybe a lid for something. Enjoy the pics, and thanks for the help!!

Whatever it is, I like it!! Did you swing your coil over the spot to see if anything metal was nearby? Don't know if it's Native American, but it's something interesting - that's for sure. Congrats on the good eyeballing work.

Wow! That's large for a stopper, unless it was for an amphora, just don't think it would have been found along the Schuylkill or even in this country.Could be a small mortar, doesn't look quite right for that either though.Interesting to say the least.I'll see what I can come up with.

Very nice, whatever it is. Just thinking.........X on the top was used to turn it, whether a tool -- or for the X. The hollow part had what ever it was they were shaping or grinding in it. Notice the black parts? The parts that had contact with other "things" turned black? Just throwing out some thoughts................I like it, alot, definate keeper!

Interestingly enough I posted a pic of one of these in WHAT IS IT? a coup[le of weeks ago. I've found a couple of these over the years along creeks just west of Philly in Delaware County. Here is a pic.....

Yes Diggum...
They are the same size but Richs' is creek worn. I stumped the guyz in What Is It. It is a porous concrete like material. I don't think it would hold up to being turned by a tool. The one shown came out of a dump behind an abandoned lumber mill in Chester Pa. which operated from 1840 thru 1910. It really resembles a large rivet. Anybody?....Anybody?
Re: Is this some kind of indian something or other??
Maybe these are some type of plugs for old sewer lines. Weren't old sewer lines made of terra cotta pipes? This material doesn't look like terra cotta, but could be used with it - glued into place perhaps.

Mine is flat on top not rounded and the four lines you see on the top that look like a plus sign seem to be carved in to it. I dont know what it is, I was hoping Justine would have some answers as she seems to know about the area around titus but I cant seem to get a hold of her.
