Del Rio/ Uvalde TX Trip 5/19-20/07

Well I had a pretty good artifact hunting trip all in all. I had about a day and a half worth of time to hunt.

Took about 5 hours of driving to get to Del Rio on Friday and by the time I was there it was dark---took an ATV out to see if there were any nutria at the creek (I have the job of pest control), but I came back empty handed as the only one I saw escaped.

I got up in the morning to discover that most of my hunting grounds were covered by vegetation from all the rain, though there were still some bare patches of land luckily. Found this point right off the bat--a broken ensor; nothing to write home about, but better than nothing.

Next I found this heartbreaker pedernales.

It was about 10 AM or so--time to take a drive to Uvalde to look at some land for sale---the land owner said the place was littered with middens/mounds and sure enough, as soon as I stepped out of the truck I found this nice little Frio point (along with a broken early triangular near by).

I also found this blade/knife in the same midden.

As I was headed back to the truck I found this little beauty--a perfect swirled obsidian point (ensor?).

Found a chopper and half of some sort of broken point at the second midden.

Here's just a couple pictures of the land.

Went back to Del Rio and searched the old digsites and found squat--so I got bored and started poking at the walls in one hole with a machete. And just as soon as I did, a good size clump of dirt dislodged from the wall, revealing this pretty nice (though tip missing) ensor.

I decided to take about a 4-5 mile hike up a near by trail and see if I could find anything in the road. Came across this broken Frio to begin with.

Didn't find anything for a good ways after the broken Frio---finally I spotted this nice little point in the road (funny how similar it is to a leaf when looking down from 6'!).

I walked a bit more and came across this on the side of the road---at first it appeared to be some sort of large, broken point; however after washing it I discovered that it's really an unfinished point which was discarded during the knapping process for some reason (cortex wouldn't dislodge/it broke--who knows!). This is a good example showing that arrowheads/atl-atl points were made base first.

I searched the surrounding area and came across this fire-popped marshall about 3 yards off the main road.

There was a little bit of daylight left whenI got to the gate on the other side; however I soon discovered it was locked and I had forgotten the combination! So I spent a good 30 minutes finding a way to safely get my finds across and climb the gate--I got back barely after dark.

I went back to Uvalde Sunday to check out the three middens again. This is the creek next to one of them.

I found this nice 3 & 1/2-4" knife (covington?) at the same midden as I had found the Frio and obsidian point the day before.

Here's a picture of the midden--the road goes right through it. There's tons of scattered fire-rock everywhere---I can't see why I didn't find more points there, evenfor the sheer size of the midden.

Here's some more pictures of the place in Uvalde.

    Here's the haul from Uvalde.

Here's the haul from Del Rio.

On the whole it was a pretty good trip. I spent a good 14 hrs + on the road, whichgot very tiring, but I believe it was worth it.

Thanks for taking a look, hope you enjoyed the ride!
