Discoidal!!
Finally! After many years of hoping to find one, I tripped over this discoidal. It is about 2.5 inches in diameter and roughly 1.25 inches wide. It is made of quartz. I had been walking for about two hours when I saw a piece of it sticking out of the mud. I flipped it up for the heck of it and was shocked! It definitely made my day. There is a small cup on one side of it. I don't if it was made this way or if it was left unfinished. Either way is fine with me. Now my wife has to put up with me the rest of the weekend talking about it.
Thanks for looking!

Four hard-core rock hunters have already inspected it "in hand" this afternoon. They all say discoidal. It doesn't have the large cupping on both sides that you normally see. It does have a small cup on one side that you can see in the first pic. It does not have a cup on the other side, which leads me to believe that it is unfinished.

That's what I think they were used for. I read that the game could get pretty rough, a lot of broken bones and cuts. I lost a good field that had a Mississippian site a couple of years ago to the tobacco buyout. I thought that the chances of finding a discoidal were slim to none after losing that site.
Looking forward to seeing your latest finds!

You'll get one someday! I thought that I would never have the chance to find one after I lost my only Mississippian site a few years ago. The thing that is strange is I found the discoidal and the blade in an area that I thought did not contain any artifacts at all. I had been concentrating on a different area of the field and neglecting this one. It definitely changed my thinking! I guess it proves that you find about anything on a good site. You just have to keep looking. I look forward to seeing your new finds!
Good luck!

Re: Discoidal!!
Adena_Man that does it for sure! What a feeling to find one. I am in the process of putting together a frame of them, but I have had to buy all mine. Looks like that spot has been overlooked buy everyone else as well. Stay on it and keep posting what you find. I have seen some like the one you found. If it had a dimple on the other side I'd call it a biscut discodial. I do know that some where made that way so when they were rolled the side without the dimple would be heaver and when it started to slow down it would end up rolling in s circular motion making it harder to hit. Just an idea and a super find!

Go find some artifacts! Wait............What's this red button do?

Thanks Jeff! I've got it sitting in my curio cabinet. Who knows when or if I will ever find another one. I'm going to walk that section of the field where I found it very hard this fall!
Godd luck!
