Hi all , I thought I would post some pics of finds from my first field I hunted when I was a kid.I used to follow a farmer behind the plow till he passed away in 89. I had a neighbor who had found over five hundred here in the forty,s. The biggest axe I ever saw 23 lbs. was found here. Alarge cache was found here in the 70,s when building a store. Old timers say there was a mound that was plowed over till it was gone,now a parking lot. How sad.This week a body was found just up river dating to 1000 b,c, Woodland period. all constuction has been halted. I,ll post more on this later.
I'll bet that was exciting, getting to hunt there as a kid, but heartbreaking when it ended. I guess we've all lost something like that. Least you have some nice artifacts to help you remember. 8)

How true Don, every year it gets worse.It used to be everyone grew tobbaco.Not the case anymore. Though there is a water plant in the planning and some digging started a few days ago on part of this site. I,ll be keeping a close eye on that. The ancient body was found on a contreversial constuction site on DP&L POWERPLANT property. There has been evidence of possible burial sites and valuable facts from the past being destroyed there . Now they, are excavating the site as I talk. Jeff
Could you imagine owning a site that produced like that? You could take your time to explore every inch of it without wondering if it was going to be plowed the next year or if it was going to be turned into a parking lot. There are two sites that I would love to own. Both of them would be impossible to get, however. I couldn't afford one acre of either one anyway. One of them is right off a major highway and the other is prime farmland. Still makes you wonder what you could find if given the time to really explore the site.

There are several burial sites up and down that river... I knew of one that was found along the river at Haverhill about 30 years ago that was never reported.. I talked to a forest ranger a few years back that told me a story about a fire road they were getting ready to make....Archies were called in for three weeks to take core samples and screen the area... all clear, then they hauled in the fill from around Hanging Rock for the bed of the road... said he got some of the best points he had every found out of that fill dirt.. got to love it LOL

That is a great story and I,m sure a true one at that.Yes I know there are several burial sites along river. One in particular a 95 yr. old man told me about when I was about 25. I found the area and never have told anyone where it is at.I don,t want no one diggin my butt up 1000 yr. from now.When I was working at the killen station below Manchester Islandsin the early 80,s there were bones found .There is a really good artifact show this sat. in Manchester at the river barn.There will be some really nice collections from all over the ohio valley and beyond. Jeff and I are both river rats and hunted the same parts of Ohio. Basically along the river...difference is he's still there and I've been in TX for 20+ years..From my meeting him on the forum and asking him questions about different places he is what he say's he is and from the looks of some of the fantastic items he has, he is a Southern Ohio Hunter...Sorry if we drifted off the original thread

Thanks Don,It has been really nice talking on the forum to you.Knowing that you had walked the same kind of fields,hilltops,and river bottoms that I have is pretty cool.I really enjoy reading the posts from all over the country but it is always nice to talk to a fellow river rat.By the way I have two brothers in Texas,SAN Antonio,Dallas area,s. That is so true Don. Mstly tobbaco fieds are being lost. From the seventies till now I,d say 70 percent are no longer plowed. That is one reason why I have been hunting a little farther north,more corn and soy fields. Jeff
