Hey- cool post! Beer bottle points, I've made a few, know what else works good.. find an old dump, ones from the twenties through the forties are good, usually find a lot of hi-lex bleach bottles and they have nice thick brown glass bottoms that work fantastic for practice knapping. Also, when you decide to go to stone try some good quality noviculite or dacite- easy to work stuff.. and of course obsidian. I will try to post some of my stuff later today, I'm so excited to see some other knappers on here!!!!!!!

Unfortunately I didn't get the response I was expecting, but that's ok. This isn't a flintknapping forum. I was just curious if anyone does this kind of thing. To me they go hand in hand.

If anyone is interested, I did just recently find a forum for creating and reliving indian life. Go to google and search paleoplanet. They have some very interesting forums and many of the people even include pics of ancient arrowheads like we do here!

Thanks man. The obsidian point doesn't show up very well but it's a killer man. Really thin and about 50% translucent. Wish I had an area devoted to knapping.. it makes such a mess that the wife keeps me on a short leash when it comes to making points. Can't blame her I guess. I figure when I move back into the country I'll start making a lot more.

I love that little point! Not many dare to attempt knapping. It's quite a skill, that's for sure. I have a question. I read somewhere that natives in the later years would knap points from glass-- apparently when times were tough and decent stone was hard to come by, perhaps (mearly a guess). I think I read that they used glass from various sources- one being red glass from railroad (crossing?) lights. If true, it's interesting that it isn't just a practice medium, but rather a necessity-driven material actually utilized by actual natives. Anyone ever heard such a thing? I'm still new (perpetually new) and curious about the myth/truth of that. Thanks, and happy hunting!

I read or heard that same thing many years ago. It is possible, I mean look at Ishi, he would watch the train off in the distance as he sat and knapped his points.. I would almost be willing to bet that it may have happened a few times in the late 1800's but I don't think it was ever a regular thing.. would be almost impossible to authenticate a piece like that..guess what I'm saying is I wonder to... if you think about it though... we brought glass with us here from the start.. a bottle breaks and they would toss it in the dump... I'm sure the natives recognized it as a resource. I found a bunch of glass flakes at an indian camp site once..and yes, I know they were flakes from knapping and yes, it was old blue/green glass... would love to find one made from it. Don't know if anybody would believe me..

I was flipping through a book on Ishi recently and it said that one of his favorite materials for knapping was man-made glass because of the ease and sharp edge it created. It makes sense

I believe that Ishi made points out of glass only after coming out of the "wild". I know that he made quite a number before passing. Also showed us an Ishi stick for knapping. His was a sad story...
