    Has This Been Worked?

I'm trying to learn what to look for. Found this this afternoon in an area with many flint chips, near a dry creek bed. Its about an 1 1/4 inch high and the top is rough where it appears a point has broke off. The rest of the stone is very smooth. Any rock besides sandstone is rare where this was found.[shadw=red,left][/shadow]

Yup, it does appear "worked" billco. Where are you located? Material looks like Jeff city chert or a Cotter.

I'm located about half way between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, just outside McCalla. Do you have any idea what this might have been used for?

Well, that blows the jeff city / cotter idea..lol. It looks like the start of a preform that didn't quite pan out for completion. If you find alot of those, you could be in a quarry area. When any knapper (abo or modern) collects flint, only a small percentage usually are acceptable to work to completion.
