Help with ID...Artifact, or random stone?

I found this tubular shaped piece last week while metal detecting. It appears to be a grooved rock, and I have a hard time believing it is random. Any help i s appreciated.

I used to find plenty of trylobites near Oneonta NY. None looked like this, but I agree it is a fossil not an artifact. It looks like a bone fragment, now that I look more closely at it.Perhaps it is a jaw bone fragment. It was found less than 1 mile from the site first complete dinosaur skeleton ever found, so it would make sense.

    Afternoon,

Looks more like a small piece of medium quality hematite....just a guess though.
