    Adzes

Here are pics of three flint adzes that I found last year. A lot of people around here would pass them up. I pick up every one that I can find. There are some that look rather roughed in with a decent bit. Then there are others that have really nice flaking. You can tell on some that you find that the maker really took his/her time with it. I guess some of the makers were more concerned with getting the right shape along with a good bit rather than making the tool symetrical and appealing to the eye. Maybe some of the other makers took a lot of pride in their work even though it was just a woodworking tool.

    Thanks for looking.

    Hello there,

I kind of think the longer the peice was used the more it developed
into shape being a good workable flint. Some perhaps used for a purpose
and left behind is my guess. Have you found any made of granite hardstones? I have a few.

Hey Bruce! Nice celts! I have a few celts made out of hardstone. They are few and far between down here in Kentucky. My best one is about 5 inches long and heavy for it's size.

    Thanks for posting!

Hey Billco! Some of my buddies just pick up points and it drives me crazy! I finally talked them into picking the tools up and saving them for me. Who knows how many they have passed over.

    Thanks for posting!

Nice Adena. Here is a polished flint celt made of Breathitt. I found it pretty near Lexington. I wish I had a better pic of it. It really is a nice artifact.

Hey Chuck! Very nice celt! I like that drill also. Is it Boyle chert?

    Good luck!

Adena, thanks. The drill is Carter Cave. The stemmed point, bifurcate, and side notched intrusive mound point are Boyles. Lots of variation in Boyles. I have found it in most every color you could imagine (within reason of course).

Hey Bruce! Nice ones! You must be in a really good area for them. I'll try to post a few of my hardstones if I can find the pics.

    Good luck!

    Re: Adzes

Hey Bruce! Here are a couple of my hardstone celts (I have very few of them). I hope to trip over another one some day. I've been trying to get my buddy to deep-plow this year. He says that he is going to do it in the next couple of years. It seems that the hardstone artifacts come up a lot more after deep-plowing. Another farmer deep-plowed a few years ago and I found three celts and a pendant along with a small metate (15 inches diameter). I also found what I think was used as an abraider. It is about 4 inches in diameter and is very gritty like sandpaper.

Thanks for the post Bruce! It's snowing again here in Nicholasville. I just let my Sheltie outside. She is standing on the back porch looking at the snow fall. She has this look on her face like she's thinking "What's that stuff??" She cracks me up with all the little mannerisms that she has.

Hope you find a smooth rock with a big groove in it this year!
