    My first Axe!

A little shorter, but taller than the Tiny green beauty this was my first axe. If you haven't read that post do! This 3/4 Iowa was found down river from the Green one. The main difference was some large trees had fallen in the river from erosion. The byproduct was severe stoppage of the river. So much so that it had left a huge amount of rock exposed since it is a rock bottom not mud!

The axe was sitting right on top only feet from where a friend found his axe months earlier. This axe is also much thicker than the green one. The next day the jam was gone and river level covered the area as it had.

The field adjacent to river has yielded some great things also. The best was a piece the landowner showed me that his two daughters found in the field. Never seen nothing like it. I can tell you about it if you like?

Now thats a nice find any day, no matter how long you been looking for artifacts. Seems like grooved axes are one thing you "nawthnuhs" have more of than we do down this way. Sweet find.

That's a helluva way to start out your axe collection. Both are very nice and I'm jealous. I hate you, we don't find them here.

    Re: My first Axe!

This is what he showed me. Quick illustration doesn't do it justice but just for reference. It weighed around 9lbs The material was a common Iowa material chalky look yellow with dark black areas. The entire surface was worked. Chippings out of it were around one inch in length down to probably quarter inch. Length was over two feet! I dont have a big hand but I couldnt reach around the handle.

I guess it's ceremonial. He wouldn't sell it. I am gonna try and contact him this summer to atleast get some pictures! If it wasnt Ceremonial a very large individual wielded that
