Wow! I wish I lived in your area! Some outstanding finds there, love the pics and that unfinished bannerstone.... I'm speechless. It's the only one I've ever seen in my entire life-

You've seen hundreds like those? Wow. I've seriously only seen a handful of completed ones from wisconsin and never an unfinished one. Then again I don't go to shows either-

I wouldn't think that you'd see many in Wisconsin but at shows in Ohio and Indiana they are fairly common to see. I reckon i've seen a few hundred like this in various stages of manufacture. A certain raging imbecile on this forum, who's been banned on another that I visit, sent me a message posing as someone else stating that it was just a piece of slate and nothing more.

Here is the very first bannerstone I found back on February 17, 1998. Since then I think i've found fourteen broken or unfinished and of those fourteen i've found two that are complete.
Pleading ignorance, what precisely is a bannerstone?
The more one learns the more he understands his ignorance. I am simply an ignor ant man trying to lessen his ignorance Those with the most birthdays live the longest

There is no precise answer. With over 30 different styles it's hard to imagine them all being used for the same purpose. Some were atl-atl weights the others it's anyones guess.
