A Show Me Post!! Everybody has Adena's , Lets see em!!

    Hey Folks ,

The one point I find the most of here in North Ohio is the Adena and the adena sub types. I know that many of you find them too. Although it is one of the most common of styles it still deserves its credit. Lets all show some love for the mighty ADENA. Post your Adena's , I know you got em'.

    Happy Huntin' , Bent-Twig.

Re: A Show Me Post!! Everybody has Adena's , Lets see em!!

Hey guys and gals. I'm not trying burst anyones bubble here, but not ALL stemmed points are Adenas. I see some in Bent_Twigs posts that aren't Adenas, a few in Jeff's, and sorry Molly, but I don't believe yours is either. Some of the types I see above are actually Genessee, Snook Kill, and Buck Creek points.

There are two basic types of Adena Points. The Early Adena and the Late Adena, or the Adena Robbins as it is called and they can be hard to tell from some of the earlier Archaic stemmed types. The classic Adena type is of course the Beavertail Type with the nice long rounded base. The Late Adena or Robbins is a more square stemmed point and is hard to distinguish between some of the earlier Arcahic types, but you have to look at the shouldering to see the difference. The Early Adena is very easy to ID because of it's classic Beavertail rounded base. The Robbins isn't as easy to ID though. It will almost always have a very square shoulder that is either straight across or drooping towards the tip slightly. I have never seen an example with a shoulder that sweeps up toward the tip. The Early Adena has basically the same shoulder as it will either droop towards the tip, be rounded off, or straight across, but never sweep up towards the base.

These first 6 pics are of classic Early Adena Points with the rounded "Beavertail" bases.

The next 2 are of Robbins Points.

These next few are of points that may be confused as Adena since they are stemmed, but I don't believe they are. The first one is actually an Archaic Heavy Duty Point. The next one I had thought was an Adena type for years, but it has beveling from resharpening which is not an Adena trait and is more than likely an Archaic Knife of some type. Now this last one still has me confused and maybe some can help me out. It kind of has an Adena look with the body type and the shouldering, but the expanding base throws me off. I haven't seen an Archaic type that matches it either.

Now I may be completely wrong on all of this and if anyone thinks I am don't hesitate to correct me. We are all here to learn from each other and to educate each other, so correcting me won't hurt my feelings one bit.

Thanks for letting me rant. lol

Re: A Show Me Post!! Everybody has Adena's , Lets see em!!

So I don't have an Adena LOL. aww shucks.
I was given that point for a xmas swap, with a few more hopewellian points, I was assured it was an Adena, well I never thought twice. I have enough on my plate learning about NC/VA point types lol.
I've looked at it closely, you are indeed correct, darn it all. lol.
So can you give me any idea what it might be, I mean the long stem & lack of shoulders should help. I have no clue.
Has I said, its from Shelby co. Indiana.

Well Adenas or not you guys have some fine points.

Molly. (makes me wanna trade for an Adena now ).

I'm actually not really sure what type yours is Molly, but I don't believe it's and Adena. I have one very similar to yours with the really long stem and short body and I'm not really sure what type it is either. Probably some type of Archaic stemmed point.

Jeff, do you have any pictures of those? All of the Adenas we find here in southern Ohio are as I described them and look like my pics. I'd like to see one of those types if you have one.
