The size you stated is also similar to ours........bout 7 inches diameter and 4 inches tall.

Can't tell the age but would guess from 40's or 50's. The one we have belonged to my wife's father who was in the Navy during World War II.

I believe NSDQ is correct regarding the vent holes......here is an odd thing I forgot. We have a second unit similar to the one in my previous pictures but it is mounted in a different style wooden "cradle" and the clock work is a Chelsea as you will see in the attached pictures. This one also came from my wife's father.... I doubt either mount is original but if one is, it would be this one since you see it is made for it........we are still pretty sure they are called a Captain's clock and now you have peaked interest......so any more news will be passed on to all.

it looks like the case to a liquid filled
boat compass. My father had one.
