Frederic Mizen Painting at local secondhand shop for $35. need advice

There is a painting sitting at a local shop. It has been there a while and I finally got the chance to look his name up. They are asking $35. I am trying to decide if I should buy it. I know nothing about paintings. How can I find out if I should buy this? I wouldn't have any wish to buy it and keep it. The only reason I would buy it is to flip it and make some money off of it. It looks really old. Its in an old frame. The colors are slightly faded. Can anybody give me some advice on this? I don't remember what the painting was but it was something like two or three ladies in victorian like dresses sitting on like old couches and chairs.

Mizens prints are very collectible and usually show lovely dressed ladies in parlors. I wonder if your find is a painting or print. If it is behind glass it would possibly be a print If the picture is in good condition with bright colors than it is work triple the price you mentioned. Just remember the picture, painting, print etc. needs to be in good condition. If the frame is ornate in design then it would be worth more than $35 . Good luck >>> CD

It is not behind glass. How can I tell if it is original? The frame is not decorative.

This is my own personal opinion....

Art should only be purchased because you as the buyer like it! You will invariably pay more than the piece is presently worth, it is time and rarity that increases the value of art. You should buy with the idea that it will hang on your wall for a long time, You should enjoy the piece.

Art is generally not a good thing to purchase with the idea of "flipping" unless you come across a real Van Gogh in a yard sale for $5. that is when you will make your money, usually it is over a period of years that art increases in value so patience is suggested.

Buy the painting if you like it and wish to see it on your wall not because it might be worth something someday.

If you google his name all kinds of sites come up. $35 is not not a lot of money if it is an original. These situations are kinda hard to make a call on though, if you like to gamble (like I do) go ahead and buy it. Do some research on it and maybe get it authenticated and you might get a really good return on your investment. On the other hand it could be a copy thats only worth $10. I would go for it.

Look at it thru a loupe. If you see pixels than its a print. If not then you might have a deal. Check ebay see what they are selling for (not asking for).

A "local shop" as in? a second hand shop?? Antique shop,The reason i ask is if it an antique type store,(higher end i mean)It's most likey the money...You can tell if it painted just by running(smoothly!)your hand over it,if its rough,textured,etc.Then its a painting,oil,etc.Using a loop is good too but i personally would only do that if the surface was flat,smooth,that would indicate print,watercolor,etc.If this peice is signed i'd buy it concidering the above metioned,Hope this helps more,remember you snooze you lose...HH ALL !!! ,
