    Va system is crap

    Just a friendly (hopefully) discussion.

I am a 10% disabled vet and have tried a couple times to get bumped up to a higher rating but was denied. I am still able to work and such the va states that my pain is not compensable at a higher rate. 6 herniated disks says otherwise in my book!

First of all, Thank-You for your Service! I sincerely hope that you get compensated soon for what you are going through. That is a very painful experience and it never lets-up!

Can the herniated discs be tied to military service? If so, contact one of the many advocacy groups that helps people navigate the labyrinth that is the VA. If not, then your condition may be denied compensation. You should still go to one of the advocacy groups in either case.

My dad had a 10% service-connected disability due to a non-combat injury when he was a Seabee in the Southwest Pacific in WWII - I remember talking to him about his disability payment and why he received it .

Your post made me curious and so I went on the VA website to confirm what I thought I remembered - about what VA disability compensation is - namely a recognition of the degree to which your service-connected injury may limit your ability to work and make a living – it is not compensation for pain and suffering and or any kind of payback of that sort.

I'm sure you're well aware of that and don't need me to tell you – you did mention that you were still working.

Here's a quote from the VA website and link to the website I got it from .

"VA compensation makes up forthe potential loss of civilian wages or civilian working timeyou’d miss as a result of, or for tending to (appointments, etc.), your injuries/medical conditions."

The whole system is sad - I know people who have taken the VA for decades, with false information. Then you have the people who actually need the help and get denied...................Wish I knew how to fix these colossal problems

All great comments and yes I have done all of the above...multiple times. The fact that I have to pay bills and actually place food on my table keeps me working.

I know of many who are getting compensation at a much higher rate and still working jobs that are more demanding than mine physically How the heck do people live with themselves abusing a system like that! I have actually reported a few but as far as I can tell nothing has been done about it and they even brag about their situation to me.

You might have to go see a real doctor and get his opinion than fill for disability and go in front of a judge. Than you might get some place.

Have you tried getting a lawyer to present your claim to the VA? As I recall, there are lawyers who specialize in doing just that, somewhat like the lawyers who do the same for people seeking SS disability. As a patient of the VA myself, I can honestly say that for the most part, about 95% of the time, I have been very satisfied with the treatment I have received and in fact, the VA docs saved my life when civilian doctors told me the problem was nothing to worry about. Actually, they were specialists from UT Southwestern Medical Center contracted to the VA medical system here in North Central Texas. Good Luck brother!!

My 93 yr old Dad is a 3 war vet (wwII, Korea, VN). Was a fighter pilot and test pilot in peacetime for the Navy. He ended up losing his hearing due to nerve damage caused by the high decilbal level from the old planes he flew. He hired an attorney that cited similar cases to the Govt and was granted 100% disability (same as his retirement pay). Talk to a couple of attorneys that specialize in this like others have recommended. Can you cite some work or injury from the military service that may have attributed to your issue?

My brother in law got disability somehow from the army. He was in a reserve unit and got booted out with a dishonorable for not showing up. He was in a truck driving unit and he claimed a back injury but it was from a drunk driving accident long after he was booted out. He never even saw combat but has ptsd all the sudden and gets $1200 a month.
As he puts it" I'll never have to work again!"
He's very excited and it's just what he wants because he's a drunk and can't hold a job. He's also got five kids with different moms that he doesn't help with either. It grinds my gears to think about this but they don't even check into most people claims I don't think. It should be easy for you to get money from them if my brother in law did. He totally faked it and they never even asked a question except where to mail his checks.

They also pay for his housing and take him shopping for furniture. I've never heard of that but it's real.
It's hard to believe someone can go back years later, especially after a dishonorable, and claim these injuries from combat when there's no records or witnesses needed and his unit never saw combat? Explain that one to me!
