New York man accused of fabricating decorated Green Beret military career | Fox News

A New York man fabricated his decorated military career, with claims of being a Green Beret, receiving medals for courage under fire and serving for 25 years all being exposed as lies, according to military documents.

Papotia Reginald Wright, of Brooklyn, claimed he served with Special Forces, but military documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, showed the veteran was not a Green Beret and did not go beyond a “specialist rank,” the New York Post reported.

Wright also boasted of serving in the Army for 25 years and said he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star -- but records showed he only served from 1982-1990 and spent most of his time as a driver in Alaska, Texas, Georgia and Egypt.

Despite apparently living a lie, Wright became a revered military figure in his community. Last year, he founded an organization in Brooklyn to help veterans. He called the organization the 8th Special Forces Regiment New York Honor Guard.

"Stolen valor is an epidemic...that stuff's unforgivable there."
- Guardians of the Green Beret member

Photos on the group’s website showed Wright at a New York Giants football game wearing what appears to be a fake Green Beret uniform.

According to the Stolen Valor Act, any individual who rewrites “provisions relating to fraudulent claims about military service were subject to a fine, imprisonment up to a year or both."

Guardians of the Green Beret said they started probing Wright after receiving tips from Internet users.

“It bothers us. Stolen valor is an epidemic. We cannot keep up with the cases sent to us,” a member of the group told the New York Post. “Wearing fake stuff -- wearing a Ranger tab, Special Forces tab, those things are hard to earn. Wearing a Purple Heart...that stuff’s unforgivable there.”

Jeff Johnson, 37, who served in the Army for more than 11 years and worked at Wright’s veteran organization, said he felt deceived.

“It wasn’t confirmed to me until three or four days ago when I got a call from one of the members of the unit who was heartbroken,” Johnson told the New York Post. “For a while I just started chuckling. It was like this uncomfortable chuckle. That’s when I realized I was played for a f------- fool.”

Johnson said Wright would tell him stories about his supposed military days, including one where he claimed a person cut out his kidney.

“He said he was living off half a kidney,” Johnson said. “He’s an amazing storyteller because he will get into details.”

Thomas Miskel, a veteran who volunteered for Wright’s Honor Guard association, said he was shocked by the allegations.

“He started to appear before football games and all that and the flags and all that,” Miskel said. “He sort of blew my mind a little bit when I found out that bugle he was blowing was a recording.”

Miskel said Wright has also failed to pay his rent in Park Slope, where his association’s offices were based.

The group said it would be investigating the claims as well and would stop posting on social media for the time being.

There was no immediate word on if Wright would face charges.

If you look at the psychology, this individual was seeking desperately to "be somebody". In his world he didn't matter, had no place of belonging. I will say a prayer for this individual, just haven't done it yet.

The thing is, we veterans belong to a greater group, where we are finally proud we served. It wasn't that way in my generation, Dad's didn't want their baby daughters dating people coming home infected by the degradation we'd experienced.

At that time, maybe they'd have rathered we hadn't come home at all.

Recently, the Vietnam Veterans of America set up a table at the Murphys, CA post office door. I walked up to the fellow there and said I was in Hué and Phu Bai and where was he. He said "Germany..... but I was in Vietnam for 30 days." WHAT? He went on to say he flew to Vietnam then got orders to Germany. I believe you must have seen "in country" for 90 days to claim the medal and campaign ribbon. Sounds like stolen valor to me. Anyone think it is a violation of the Stolen Valor Act? If it is, I will go to a local meeting and call him out. If I see a DD214 with the service medal and campaign ribbon on it, I will publicly apologize. ╦╦Ç

My ears always perk up when I hear a man seemingly boasting about his military career or combat experience. Ninety-nine-point-nine-percent of the combat vets I know spend more time trying to forget it, rather than talking about going outside the wire. The only time I wear anything is at American Legion meetings and events.

I was a member of the American Legion and VFW. Don't go to anything now. I got a call from my cousin today. 27th Marines. I stayed with him when coming back to 'nam after one of my R&Rs. He saw lots of ****. I probably saw more VC and NVA troops than he but the ops he went on were larger. Mine were lots of less than squad size, mostly. I talk about it when with other Vietnam vets but not too much with others. We are getting to be a scarce breed. ╦╦Ç

I will never forget my first real battle. I was in the 19th Indiana and we were just north of chancellorsville
the lt told us the rebs were coming in from the west, so we lined up three deep across kings pike ( I think it was)
we let the rebs march up the road and about 200 yards out some fellows fired a few shots Most of us waited a bit longer then we let em have it! They did fire back with fervor but we made em retreat. Days later you know what? we found out it was old jacks brigade, thought we were something after that

Guys have been bullshitting about military service/heroics since the dawn of war.

I once was chatting with an old guy at a wedding reception, was only about 25 at the time. Said he was a USN WW2 vet and I was more than willing to listen, having been studying naval battles since I was a kid.
Said he served on the USS Houston, and that perked up my ears quick. [USS Houston was an early casualty of war, sunk not long after Pearl Harbor in a gallant and epic series of battles in the Battle of the Java Sea]

I said good god, Houston ? He beamed proudly and said yes sir, quite a ship she was. [Not many survived the sinking, those that did to a man were captured, and of course many of those died during the brutal years long captivity]. I said wow and asked about the battle, sinking and capture, figuring he'd be impressed that a young man knew so much about a battle most have never heard of.
He said oh no, it wasn't sunk. He then went on to recite participation in about every battle of WW2 in the pacific from Midway to Guadalcanal to the Philippines ,, Whereupon I said have a nice night and walked away. Didn't think it would do any good to call him out, I was hugely disappointed.

[Of the 1,061 aboard, 368 survived, including 24 of the 74-man Marine Detachment, only to be captured by the Japanese and interned in prison camps. Of 368 Navy and Marine Corps personnel taken prisoner, 77 (21%) died in captivity.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Houston_(CA-30)]

Talked with another gent who was on the Doolittle raid - In a B-52.
I said, you mean B-25 ,, He said no, B-52, then he couldn't even name the carrier they took off from.
Once again, I walked away.

Was at an old military aircraft event down in FL last year and ran into some guy sitting in a wheelchair watching the goings one. Started to talk to him and found out he was a navigator working for Paul Tibbets (not on The Enola Gay but another one in the raid) and went on the A-bomb raid!. Later in the day saw him being interviewed by a TV news reporter. Was real interesting having talked to him. He was really sharp in his memories too.

Mudflap,
Even as a kid of 10 years old in 1950, I would avidly read the Chicago Trib paper to watch the battle line of our GIs as they approached the Yalu River, separating Manchuria from NK. For some reason, I have never forgotten that experience.
Don......
