(A ) give it a bit of time -- we got 4 days of 20 mph + NNE winds expected ---let the wind do its thing --- and (B )the high waves will be doing their part too. ---plus (C) you got to be at the right spot (research amigo) --- its as simple as A, B, C

At Vilano, you'll need to work the cut between low tide and the sand bar. The entire "shelf" (about 4 ft. of sand was taken out. I was out surveying the turtle nests yesterday. Sadly, two of the recent nests were washed out. I plan on hitting Matanzas inlet (actually just north of the ramp access) tomorrow. Either way, be sure to work the cuts as the goodies will settle as the sand is swept out to sea. Good luck and happy hunting.

yes I indeed can "see" in my minds eye exactly what this rare bit of weather conditions can do --- a steady 4 day long --20 mph or better NNE winds with both rain and high surf eating away at the beach sands --- old and rare items long unseen might see the light of day for the first time in many many years ---- if one is at the right place at this right time and your finds could be very impressive indeed , I think.

Can you hunt anastasia park? I was there a few weeks back. Isn't it a state park? I eagerly awaiting the waves too, just further south.

Can you hunt anastasia park? I was there a few weeks back. Isn't it a state park? I eagerly awaiting the waves too, just further south.

You can hunt the dry beach part of the state park. The rest is off limits. Supposedly, you aren't allowed to be in the water detecting as it is assumed you are looking for old stuff. The dry sand is fair game as they assume you are only looking for lost clad and the like. Just be sure to fill your holes. Don't ruin it for others. Now, I say "supposedly" with regards to the water, but enforcement is so lax that I doubt you'll raise any suspicion. Just be sure to be out of the water before the swimmers and lifeguards show up. Note: Be prepared to dig. The state park's beaches are littered with shrapnel.

I was watching the news and a guy was seen on Jax beach with a minelab detecting covered in sran wrap..lol..He had no competition...I saw no on else out there..

Vilano was nice today. There was some other old-timer out there, but I wasn't worried about the competition. His search coil was at a 45 degree angle pointing upwards, and he was swinging fast. Also, he was stuck up on the "dry" sand. I was working a cut at low tide about two feet deep between the sand bar. Got a few crusty finds. There were a few exposed bricks that I was quick to remove. They are relics from the foundation of the Vilano casino that had it's heyday back in the roaring 20's.

Warning for those that are going to hunt the First Coast: Portuguese Man O'War have been washed up on the beach. They will still sting if you aren't careful where you walk. For those that venture into the surf, be alert.

man o wars are called that for a reason --- steer clear of em -- even dead they can "sting" and are very very bad --- if stung --vinager to counter act it and go to a hospital asap. ---man o wars and jelly fish are found in the area at times--- the storms high east / north east winds most likely swept em in from off shore.

thanks man. i will stay away from them. If I am lucky enough to get out while I still have this window of opportunity open...So how long do u think this window will stay open? Until the rains leave?? or has it already closed?

the peak time to hunt is now ---however it will take the ocean / beach awhile to replace what sand washed off shore back ashore--- say about a week .

The problem is not the replacement of the sand but others hunting the areas. Vilano up to Surfside park has been hit hard. You'll need to venture into the water to find anything. The site of the original Mantanzas Inlet (access ramp) had very little erosion. Again, head to the surf for any relics exposed. ASP might be a productive area as it has not been touched by other detectorist (yet). The parking lot at Pope Road (the free one next to St. Aug Beach Resort) has been under water, and there has been massive erosion on the southside of the park. There is about a 5' beach escarpment to hurdle. Good luck and happy hunting.

Hey man I Don't know how you know what beaches have been hit....Do you have beach cams? lol...If I had the time i would cover every beach south of Jax...I bet there is alot to be had.

I'm at the beach everyday. I'm an active member of the Florida Sea Turtle Stranding Network. I also help open and close the beach ramps. In addition, I assist in beach lighting enforcement. With all the access, I also take every chance to swing the coil.
