5th October 2004: Drove to Fort Pierce down to John Book Park. Gates are closed, drove a 1/2 mile further south and found Douglas Park open. Got to hunt there for about 3.5 hours finding a lot of junk and a modern nickle. I hear a whistle and look up to see a deputy sheriff walking toward me. He politely tells me that the beach is closed. I inquuire of other beaches and he tells me ALL St. Lucie County beaches are closed. I drive away and head for Indian River county beaches and find all of them closed, gates locked. I drive up to Bonn Steele in Brevard county where 1/2 and 1 Reale's are being dug and find the gate closed and locked. Only beaches open are Melbourne's Spessard Holland North and Indianlantic where there isn't any 1715 ships offshore.

Photo 1: Spessard Holland north beach view; photo 2: Douglas Park north beach view; photo 3: Indianlantic north beach view.

Deputy said beaches may be closed a few days or a few weeks. Be sure to call the Sheriff for those counties about the closure of the beaches so you don't make a 130 mile drive for nothing, like I did. I'd appreciate it if someone makes a notification on this site when the beaches have reopened. I'd like to go back and try again.

If you have never been to a War Zone, drive down SR A1A and US 1, those residents got hammered by those hurricanes. Boats didn't fare too well to as photo 4 shows.

Good luck to all.

Sounds suspicious to me... like the State is trying to keep detectors off the beach for their own gain. Seems they'd cash in on post-hurricane tourism if they'd be friendlier to those of us looking for Spanish coins. The archaeology has been done, and the stories are known... not like there is more to learn from another piece of eight. I think the beach management in Florida ought to take lessons from Britain.

If someone finds out anything before hand about if the beaches are open or not please post it here!!! I am planning on going to Biketoberfest in 2 weeks but am going to do more TH'ing than anything... My condo survived the storms, one good thing, but if the beaches are still closed, it might not be worth the trip! Thanks!

The Board Of County Commissioners issued a press release on October 5th stating some IRC Parks are Re-Opening to the public. Unfortunately they are all inland parks and the last item of the press release states "For safety reasons, all beach parks and other parks will remain closed due to hazardous conditions and will remain closed until further notice."

What the press release should state is: "For reasons of greed , all beach parks will remain closed due to lucrative conditions and will remain closed until we notice nothing left."

Sorry, just venting. I think I can manage to navigate a beach without injuring myself on wayward seaweed clumps. >:(

As I was being escorted from the beach by the deputy.? He stated that the construction workers who are trying to rebuild the beach access parking couldn't get into the parks because the beach goer's, fishermen, th'ers and sightseer's were parking in the areas they were trying to dump sand and use their heavy equipment.? Yes, they'll be on the beach moving sand to rebuild the dunes and plant their sea oats.? They were already pushing sand around the John Book Park.? Coins and artifacts that are shallow now will probably be buried deep again? >:( until another nor'easter comes along and tears up the beach.
They should close one beach access at a time, rebuild it and then open that one and move down the line.? Closing all of them just PO's everybody.? Some guys told me they were entering the beaches regardless of the "Posted:No Trespassing" signs? :o which is totally stupid.? The counties could retaliate by posting signs forbidding metal detectors on the beaches.? The Federation has enough problems without creating new ones to be legislated.? ?Everybody just cool? 8) it until the counties open the beaches and we can return legally to hunt the beaches.? The TH'ers probably should call their respected County Commissioners and ask them to open one beach access until one of the others one is fixed.? Thanks!

I just returned from the treasure coast last night and yes some beaches are still closed. Most Indian River beaches were locked tight.
Brevard beaches were open and I did some detecting and found nothing but junk. Also did some detecting just south of the Sebastian Inlet and found mostly junk, not even any clad money.
I'll be going back soon just as soon as they open some more beaches. By the way, the beaches are trashed. I've never seen them so bad. No sand left and trash everywhere. >:(

Most all the beach side, Barrier Island beaches in Brevard County are closed all the way up to Cape Canaveral. In just about every case it is because the crossovers have been either completely or partially destroyed during the two hurricanes that hit the Treasure and Space Coast, and they do not want folks injuring themselves or tramping down what is left of the dunes.
In 1999 after hurricane Floyd, many of the Brevard County beaches were closed for about six months (spring and early summer), before county crews went to work on rebuilding the crossovers.
I have been detecting on several of these beaches since the hurricanes of this year, and have seen many other people on the beaches. The only beach that police have been keeping folks off of up this way is the beach at Patrick Air Force Base. All I have been finding is junk, and lots of it. The beaches are a real mess.

I got this email from some site that I had joined that is a treasure site, and the email said the beaches along the treasure area of Florida are giving up loads of gold and silver coins. Where they got this info, I don't know, but it sure can cause alot of people to run to the beach with their detector. I emailed them back about the closed beaches, but haven't heard anything yet. Rumors hah.

Is anyone BeachHunting today? I live in Indialantic and the Brevard Beaches that you can get to are just giving up clad coins and the usual junk but I'm addicted and am still going out. Low Tide is 11 something this morning

Thanks, Fisheye, but it looks like all that's left of the famous Chuck's steak house is a vacant plot, if I have it figured right. Washed away in the hurricane? Or was it gone beforehand?

Chuck's Steak House had been closed for a while and was torn down in August to early Sept. I was there the first week of August and came back the second week of September, and it was gone!

Finally-- free parking at the beach right where and when I want to be, and I'm on the wrong coast! ;D
