Just wanted to let you all know, that I will probably keep posting, but will no longer "describe" the how's, where's, etc... Like Snooksion posted, there are people on here that although I am sure a tiny minority, seem to toss etiquette aside when it comes to this whole "Treasure" thing... Just like fishing, if you start talking about what you caught, and where you caught it, next thing you know your "honey hole" is fished out... Case in point..
You all have read my posts of late, and the great success I have been having.. Since I have mentioned numerous times where I live, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to narrow things down with a little work.. I happened to be talking to one of the workers at the site I have been hunting, and he asked me "was that you I saw last night"... I mentioned that I had been there, but it was in the afternoon. He then told me that around 9pm he saw "two guys" in the water with headlamps on. I asked him what they were doing, thinking they may have been wade fishing for bass since the spawn is going on right now. "No", he replied, then said he saw one real good and that he had a "scoop like yours"...
Now I realize that I do not have any exclusive right to the area, and although I cant say for sure it has never been hunted before, the amount of finds I have been getting indicate that if it has, it has been far and few between... I also know that there are probably tons of people who never post, but read frequently to glean information. Anyway, the worker told me he yelled "you finding much" and the guys didnt answer, but soon after, he didnt see them anymore and they had turned their lights off..
Of course, I had to tell him it wasnt me.

So the point of this rant is two-fold.. First, as stated, I will probably be simply posting my finds and nothing more. So please dont ask for particulars, even whether it was in salt or fresh, depth, etc.. For those of you who "know" me pretty well, I will be more than happy to "talk" hunting via email etc.. But I dont bust my butt investigating and searching for new spots simply for some rude and lazy people to use my work to make it easy for themselves. If I happen to run into those people, or if you are reading this, I will say "SHAME ON YOU"... To all others, sorry for the angry post, and happy hunting...
Lastly, the silver is cleaning up well (thanks Lorraine), and I will post pics from the last two hunts and before/after pics soon. I have been so busy with appointments, getting ready for Friday's surgery, that I just havent been able to get the pic's done. I will though, I promise..

My opinion...this hobby has become very popular as of late. More guys out hunting, more guys posting...hence more guys out hunting. The internet and forums like this aren't doing us many favors. Sure it's fun to post your finds but it also opens up the entire world to your hunting grounds. This was a fringe hobby w/o much competition...until the internet came along. Think about it. Are your beaches pretty picked over? Posting 5-6 gold ring days are bound to attract attention and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to put 2+2 together. I'm pretty much done with these forums myself SS.

Wait till they make a reality show on metal detecting. Its seems like it's only a matter of time!

This does not pertain to water hunting but it amounts to the same thing.

Several years ago my wife and I belonged to a coin hunting club, and I made the mistake of shooting my big mouth off about a great spot we had found and gotten permission to hunt. The owner specified two or three people was OK but no large groups were welcome.

When asked about where we were getting the great coins we were entering the finds competition every month I told about our spot. They asked if we could get permission to have a club hunt there, and I explained the owners request about no large groups of people.

Well it seems they didn't listen and about two months latter my son and I went out to our spot to hunt and was confronted by the County Sheriff saying we were trespassing. I explained we had permission so he took us over to the owners home. Now this guy was really PO'd as a group from the club showed up a couple weeks earlier on a weekend did not ask permission and he had them run off. I apologized and explained I had no idea this took place, but just the same he told us never to come back. A hard lesson learned. I don't belong to that club any longer and I don't spout off about my hunting spots any more. :coffee2: Rick

It depends on where "your spot" was, I still think there is nothing wrong with posting your finds, don't need to name the beach or where at the beach you were if you don't want to. Someone looking at me knows I am in Orlando, I have access to both east coast and west coast beaches for hunting and South Florida beaches if I chose and that covers a lot of beaches.

If I said I hunted Daytona beach and found 5 rings today your talking approx 23 miles of beach, at low tide at least 100+ yards wide of open beach not counting the shallow water. If someone is going to look at my post then run to the beach to hunt it they still have to get the coil over the target, hear it, and know to dig it, and we are talking 23 miles long x 100+ yards wide, THAT IS A LOT OF BEACH TO COVER! Even if 6 people run there...........

If you spot is a small fresh water beach then best to lie and said you made a 50 mile road trip, or if it is a smaller salt water beach like Clearwater, Indian Rocks, Cocoa, then it is getting hit hard anyway, no matter what you post or if you even post....

Good news is Spring Break is right around the corner.... ;D :hello2: :icon_thumright:

So how do you know they are getting their Info Here ?

How do you know it isn't From word of Mouth
right there.

How do you know it wasn't somone who saw you there
& Decided to give it a try.

How do you know it wasn't completely Coincidence ?

Do you use Invisibility Powder ?

Just saying, I'm sure I'v hunted spots
where others have gone before,
Without thought of somone I Don't know
Thinking it's theirs.

Or Even Caring :dontknow:

We'd soon run out of spots If we refused to hunt where somone else was. & If we got permission from a Land owner who says
somone else hunts it too,
Are you going to find him & Ask permission also
for a site you already received Permission for ?

Yes I'v asked other hunters when they were there at the Time
I Arrived to Hunt it for the first time,
. But not if they wern't there at the time.

By the way, if it's a great site
Give me Coordinates

my views: anyone who knows the history of metal detecting knows several facts,
A: most of the easy silver coins and older artifacts from parks and schools etc was dug up long ago by the early detectorists.
B: beaches, swimming holes, playgrounds and parks are about the only places where new drops are made with any regularity so that is where we hunt. It does not take a genius to find these areas with a little work.

At this point in history we are left with few truly virgin areas that have significant treasure, we cannot compete with the big dollar corporations when it comes to mining or treasure hunting so we are left with the meager pickings. Now we have people who would like to claim an area for themselves to detect exclusively, that typically doesn't work as others are just as smart as we were and able to figure out where to go without any help. The locations mentioned in the forums just get a little more attention perhaps due to significant finds mentioned. After all, with this economy we have more determined people who lurk on our boards for information on where to hunt, the same reason alot of us joined to begin with.

Very good idea, but sad that one has to lie to fellow board members... As you and others said, if I were to have a great day at Miami, simply posting "miami area" could mean anywhere on 11 miles of beach... Where I went wrong was to get too specific, not naming the lake, but also as stated, when one has posted "I live near xxxx", and then "on a lake", was just too much info..
Wouldnt mind so much if I had the $$ to continue to hit areas 2-3 hrs away, but since I dont, it was so cool to have a spot I COULD afford to hit often... We'll see how this all turns out, I should be thankful I got what I did... I'll keep my fingers crossed that it was just a freak thing, but from now on, only those I know pretty well and trust will get more info that might help them figure out new kinds of areas to hunt... I want my "buddies" to be just as successful as me, but not those who want info spoon fed to them... Obviously those type are not in it for the same reason most of us are, the hobby and thrill of the hunt..
Off to Cleveland Clinic in an hour for surgery..... Will post when able to keep you updated.. Last two days have been hell, spent yesterday puking and the usual cocktail of pain meds did nothing to stop it... Almost went to the ER... *Sigh*.. A bit better this morning...
Until later my friends..

It's a lousy thing, but there are some "cyber lurkers" on these forums who act like modern day claim jumpers.

Yes, I know the land isn't ours and anyone can hunt there who wants to, but I guess SS's experience warns us that if we want to keep a site to ourselves as much as possible, simply posting finds without giving clues as to location might be a good idea.

There's a lot of detectorists in Florida, and not all of them are the nicest people (just most of them! :icon_thumleft:)

Silver Surfer, hope you're feeling better with each passing day after your procedure.

Silver Surfer I hope your surgery goes off without a hitch and works well for you!

In the "I dug it at" ~the beach~a park/school~ suffices for a location unless it's between good hunting buddies.

Hope you have a speedy recovery and get back to swinging soon. :coffee2:

Fishing forums have strick rules about mentioning location. Just don't do it. There are many lurkers who will absolutely fish the spot out. On surf fishing, if you are catching, people will move right in on top of you to try to force you out of the spot. On fishing beaches that's called mugging and is common practice for the jerks who do it. You do all the work to find the right spot and then some Ahole with binoculars tries to force you off it. Just the way it is and another reason to become a night fisherman.

That said, showing your finds with general info will be fine.

I Always found this Funny.

People Fish along Creeks & If you cross a Bridge
you see a Dozen cars There. & When you see People Fishing you Always
see somone along side them Fishing the same hole
Whether they are friends or Not, A Third person sees them Fishing that hole, He has to Walk over & Throw his line in too :laughing7:

That would be my hint to Relieve myself in the hole :coffee2:

Any "secret spot" somebody has ,was probably someone else's "secret spot" already. Not
too many spots that have not already been hunted at one time or another. This hobby has
been around for a long time.Laying claim to a spot isn't logical. At least in saltwater they
open and close,so none last too long. That being said, stay out of my secret spots-which
is everywhere. ;D

I have been chuckling at all these boohoo I'm not posting anymore posts... first off a beach is never hunted out... its the person behind the detector that makes them successful more than the machine... I never post pictures of where I hunt or give anyone hints... I recently hunted a supposedly hunted out beach and scored 8 deep gold rings there... you don't want others hunting where you hunt... then stop posting pictures of your beaches, stop giving out hints and stop complaining on these forums.. remember there are more eyes lurking out there than the ones signed up...

How quick we forget...
The OLDTIME Florida hunters that were on the Beach's in the 80's, stories of 5 to 6+ rings a day. Then the word got out, books were written, Florida became one of the hottest spots to live and hunt.... Now we have the internet...Many are luck to get one ring a week.....Like Craig said, Now its the person behind the detector that makes them successfull that's what separates the Men from the Boys......

Boy, do I remember those by-gone days. It's nice to go back and look at my old photos and remember how it use to be before the internet became popular and made the state of FL so small. Those days are gone, they will never be back as long as gold stays above $1,000. per ounce. I got use to it a few years ago and as time goes on, others will get use to it as well. Gold will NOT be found on every vacation like it once was, and the fresh water lakes, at home will become more popular, just like the one that started this post.

lol So I just joined this forum like 5 minutes ago and the first three threads I read are about stalkers stealing your spots.
I don't know if I want to hang in a forum so full of crooked people.
