Do you find sifters helpful when metal detecting in waters that are still enough to use them? ???

I made two different size sifters and was surprised that the 18” sifter was plenty large enough to hold a couple of scoopfuls without sinking or spilling over. My 25” sifter is reinforced by a ¾” x 1.5” wood frame where the 18” is small enough to not require reinforcement.

Small = 18” x 18” (11” sifting area) with ¼” holes and weights 20 ounces
Large = 25” x 25” (18” sifting area) with ¼” holes and weights 2.5 lbs

They also serve a dual purpose because my wife used them to find 883 sharks teeth down in Southwest Florida last weekend. :icon_thumright:

Makes up for me not finding any Au or Ag during my 10 hours of searching down in the waters of the Gulf… :'(

I use one everytime I hunt a shallow lake or pond. Its usefull to float the scoop.
( I use a two handle wand) And when you get into the clay and peat it allow you to dump the find in and just keep hunting allowing the water to sift the goodies.

Never go without it!!!!!!

I've had it in water that no sane person would ever consider hunting in and it did way better than I did!

Time that I used to spend looking for targets in scoop is now spent looking for targets in bottom.

No harder than taking scoop, and a great place for trash bag, bottle of water, etc Did I mention that it will float with several scoops of bottom, scoop, detector and me.

I attached a decoy anchor and throw it overboard, it keeps sifter from crowding me and leaves drag marks in the bottom if you can see the bottom (grid lines)

Has very little metal in it so I can use a vibra probe to find the really tough to see stuff.

Steve :-)

In your top pic, what material are you using for the sifter bottom? I like the simple design and have toyed with the idea of something similiar. Here in Texas, we have to deal with rock bottoms versus the sand and I am looking at a design that will allow the weight of rocks, without it being too bulky.
