Went there during the summer for a couple of weeks, places were crawling with detectorists all over the dry sand both day and night. For some reason that I don't know of, not a lot were out at Coronado Island, that's where I wanted to try. Good luck!!

Go early in the AM or late in the afternoon; otherwise you'll be crossing paths with many other MDers.

Check the local papers and Craig's List for items lost on the beach within the last day or two.
From San Diego to Oceanside you've got 40 miles of beaches to work; though not all easily accessible or equally populated.
If you can work the water, you'll be in the 1% group; versus the 99% who work the dry stuff.
