Hit two beaches today, one was oceanfront and the other was back at the rocks.
Pickings were slow, but I did find my oldest and best coin ever, so I had a great day today.
Read this, my buddy sharkhunter bob found it for me while I was searching google. This is it.
1789 Colonial Rum Slave Trade Caribbean Black Dog Coin
Description:
1789 A French Colonial Coin used in the Triangle Rum / Slave / 13 Colonies Trade. New England sea merchants brought slaves from Africa to work on the Caribbean sugarcane plantations.
Molasses was then shipped to the 13 Colonies and made into rum. The first US Colonial rum distillery was in Staten Island, New York in 1664. Three years later, Boston set up their own distilleries.
Rum manufacturing was the NUMBER ONE industry in Colonial New England for years. Rhode Island rum was at one time accept as currency in Europe along with Gold!
Some historians speculate that the Sugar Act of 1763, passed by England to tax colonial molasses, was the beginning of Colonial rules or laws that led to Rebellion, the War for American Independence.
This coin was minted at the Paris Mint, thus the A mintmark. These coins were struck over previously issued French Sou Marques, also wafer thin.
Both the Sou Maruqe coin and the Cayenne 2 Sous coins were struck in billon silver, which is about 22% silver and the rest copper. Over 99% of the Cayenne 2 Sous you see today only show copper, with the small silver content worn off over the last 200+ years.
