I spend alot of time w/scuba and excal.
Words of advice....
Don't worry about the tone. Worry about the size of the target.
Buy an Excal, Turn volumn up all the way, FAN EVERYTHING!. Excal works great on land also, (or use as a back up machine on land)
I can't tell you how many times I have gotten a gold ring that sounds like crap because it has a broken band, or is next to gargage, or is on it's edge, or gold mixed with odd elements.
Chains are funny also. Most chains (bracelets) are not clasped. They are broken and not laying in a perfect solid pile. So they too sound like crap most of the time.
I will say that I don't think the Excal is as strong on small targets as some of the other machines. But, I love the iron Knock out!
good luck,
Gary G.

Small targets are no problem, I use the excal on land all the time and find 22 lead and smaller targets with ease.
My first 2 trips with it I scored a 1701 and 1700 British half Penney not 10 yards apart on ground I hunted with the MXT many times before. I'm amazed with the Excal;s ability, though it does suffer in finding small gold chains. HH :icon_thumright:
