First thought is always the battery. Next.... sounds like its how a detector sounds when a coil isnt connected. I assumed you checked to ensure you didnt hit a knob and that you shook the coil cable. Im hoping you have a back up machine.

When battery starts to fail it will act just like you described. Check your battery after a full recharge, see what your volts and amps are, battery may be failing..
