Adjacent to that is the new location for Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville Beachside Bar Pavillion...That sand they are grading in front is mostly all from the last two replenishments projects and is mostly broken shell fill...
Not that you couldn't find something there as tons have in the past, but I wish anybody good luck at this time...Many keep trying and many keep going home with the mumbles :D
I could hunt there everyday, but don't if that tells you anything..

What they are actually doing is dragging the rake to level out all of the clumpy mounds of sea grass that were left after Sandy and the following storms...They started south of there at Atlantic Club and have been working there way North on the beach..
Now if they were really digging and moving huge piles places, well then it might get interesting..Even the guy with the huge front end loader is just scraping the top and dumping the sea grass into the ocean :(
Whta's amazing is that they can put these massive piles of sea grass at low tide one day and there is not a sign of any by mostly the next set of tides..

Last night they had a pit dug at the water line & moving sand to where this Tent or Crapper ?
sits .

They were actually driving the front end loaders into the pit.

not sure what that's about

Untitledhkjhk.jpg

the Beachside Bar should be done soon they are working 7 days a week

That's interesting..It's snowing today, but if I get down there tomorrow I'll report back...I hope they aren't just burying storm or construction type debris :( that would be gross...There is a ton of old pier debris beneath the sand in that stretch, so possibly they are scooping some of it up and getting rid of it..I think you have peeked my curiosity :)

The sad part is that even with most of the last replens sand gone the dredgers are going there next after Ocean City, as AC is supposed to start in May and into the summer :(

From the angle of the pics, The pit was at waters edge between the Lamp post & the tent

when in the pit, only the very top of the front end loaders were visible.

It was hard to believe, that close to waters edge, the pit didn't fill with water,
so it is possible the distance from the waves was fruther then it looks,
but it was definitely closer to the ocean then the tent.

Good Luck !

There is a huge storm water pipe very close to that spot, so it's also possible that they were doing some type of work to it's foundation..There were so many guys hunting on Saturday down that way and most likely yesterday, that somebody would have had to check it out...
I didn't go that far down after I saw so many hunters on Saturday, so I'm not really sure..If anything interesting I'll let you know..

I watch the dozers working the beach replenishment areas and It amazes me they don't sink into the sandy muck.

These beaches were extensively replenished. Even with sandy they are not down to pre- replen levels in many areas.

For example, Octy hasn't made a reappearance. Still buried beneath tons of sand. If she ever does the hunt will be on!!!!!!!

That said, that hunters are coming off AC beaches with old silver shows that there has been a pretty heavy duty mixing.

Yes even all the cement trucks and Tractor Trailors lately,
I didn't see any sink, although they did redo the boardwalk where the Cement trucks crossed
after. Perhaps one broke something.

"Octy" ? I have a hunch on what you mean, But no idea where or if I'm right

Octy ?

They generally have actual cement at some of the boardwalk crossings for this sort of thing..It's rare to see, but it does exist...
Octy is a name some out of towners gave to a piece of Steeplechase Pier that is buried in the sand there..It is a piece of concretion with rebar sticking out that looks like tentacles, so I guess they gave it a cute name..
When it was exposed that beach was down near the hard pan and hunters were finding some amazing old silvers and relics..Unfortunately I missed that as I didn't get back into hunting until a year later :(

Steeplechase Pier was built I think around 1899 and it stood adjacent to Steel Pier...It would have been almost right on the spot you see them building the Margaritaville Complex on the beach...
It burned either in the late 70's or early 80's as did Million Dollar Pier and eventually Steeplechase was torn down and they
totally rebuilt Million Dollar where currently The Pier stands across from Caesars Casino...

Hate showing my age, but I grew up riding the kiddie rides on both of those piers... Lots of fond memories..I remember when Million Dollar Pier burned down it was a really sad moment :(

I spent a weekend in Atlantic City every year before the Casinos.
from about 1965 up maybe earlier :dontknow:
most of the time was spent on Steel Pier, we always stayed at the Kentucky Hotel

Never actually rode the rides, or knew the name of that pier,
was on it a few times, just never rode the rides.
I'd say Steeplechase Pier from your description

You might have seen me detecting out front then :) ?? I bought my first detector in the fall of 1974 from the best I can retrace from some early finds I still have that are labeled..So I could have been swinging by on the beach those summers of 75, 76 and 77 prior to Resorts opening....Wouldn't it be funny if you said hey I got into the hobby cause I met some kid swinging a Compass detector while we were vacationing in AC ?? LOL

I think that Kentucky Hotel may still be standing... Not sure, but it wouldn't be the nicest place to vacation nowadays..LOL

If it wasn't Steeplechase then it would be Central Pier, cause that is very close to Kentucky Ave. and also had amusement rides..

The pic you highlighted with the arrow is the pipe supports I mentioned, so you said they were digging just North of there..Hmmm ??

Wasn't the nicest back then :tongue3: But it was cheap :laughing7:

in the arial , Looks like parking lot now.
I'm fairly certain it was between Pacific & Boardwalk.
And it definitely was on the south (west) side of the street

Great section of the city featured !!

Where else can you walk two blocks and go swimming, metal detect the beach, grab a hooker, walk the boards, have some Pic-A-Dilly wings, an Irish Car Bomb, sample numerous narcotics, see a strip show and crash back in your room all within an hour ?? LOL

I like the new tourism slogan "DO AC"... I wonder if what I just described is was what they had in mind ??

BP, has it mostly right. Octy is a huge piece of concrete embedded with long rebar strands. So named by members of one of the SJ beach hunting Face Book groups. They named it Octopus beach, then shortened to Octy. it's name predates my entry and BP's re-entry into the hobby. And it sits directly opposite Iron Beach. That's the beach in front of the Taj on the other side of Steel Pier.

The significance of Octy is as a sign. A sign that the beach is at very low levels of sand. if you can see Octy it's game on. Not only for Octopus beach but for Iron beach and for the beaches directly to the south. Because octopus beach stood directly under a pier built in the late 1800s the old goodies just never quit showing up. From 100 year old silver coins to 100 plus year old gold jewelry. One of my coolest finds there was an 1800s baseball player. Stands about eight inches tall. It looks like it was the top of a trophy, but really old and even with no melt value, a top find.

Ironically, my best day on that beach was a day that I decided it was too crowded to hunt there. I begrudging trudged under Steel Pier and out onto Iron beach for what i thought would be a short hunt just to wait for Octy to become less crowded. But then i hit a silver coin and then another and then another. On that went for three hours. Iron beach was down to the geo tubes. So it was low as well. ( Geo Tubes are part of dune rebuilding systems)The silver slowed down but i kept going until i was too tired to dig. 20 silver coins were among the clad and wheaties. So the place is amazing!!!!! I should say - was amazing before Replenishment.

AC is still very rough. In the last two or three years two tourist car jacked out of casino parking garages and killed. Another shot in the head but survived. Both car jacked for their cars. Two tourist killed last year on the street, stabbed to death. Petty crime is rampant. Drunks and drug fiends on the beach. Police could give a crap. Too busy making the cash register ring by ticketing tourist for silly BS. The big white lie is that the caisino district is safe, but not even close. You realy need to watch yourself.

And, once a block or so off the boardwalk, much of the city is no different than any other inner city ghetto.
When i go, I'm always in one of my old cars. When i park i leave nothing, not even a baseball cap showing on the seats. Drug Fiends will break your windows doing hundreds in damage just to get pennies off the console. Learned that the hard way!!!

Truth is AC has been royally screwed by the politicians and mismanaged by its own inept city government. One that like too many places has seen more than it's share of corruption.

was there for 3 days last year during the Go Minelabbing event.

although the nightlife was interesting to say the least , I think I saw a real Life Vampire/Zombie :laughing7:
She was wearing a Hoodie & I made the mistake of Trying to see her face & Thought WOH ! :o
when she looked at me with her one eye . even under her hoodie she had the left half of her face covered & just an eye Visibe for some reason. (style ?)

I Had no problems on the boardwalk & I was on them all times of the night.
even got approached by a young lady to borrow my Cell phone,
while her & her friends (locals) appeared to be highly out of it, & I had no fear.

I believe the Double murder of the 2 canadians was the next weekend,
but I personally Like AC. just a shame it's so far away.
I'd get lost on the other side of Atlantic Ave though.
