Sponge, I agree with vpnavy; I believe that this is a Catholic Religious medal: " Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal".

The date on the medal should read as 1837, the date on which the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal", located in Perryville, Missouri was completed and consecrated.
